Role and Responsibilities

The Community Organizer (CO) CCP mobilizes an assigned geographic community in the South Bay, SPA 8, to impact change around youth and community alcohol and other drugs (AOD) education: alcohol, marijuana, prescription drugs, and Substance Use Disorders (SUD) and related issues through environmental advocacy, policy, and social change campaigns. The Community Organizer I uses the Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) to monitor and implement a strategic plan in coordination with the County Department of Public Health SAPC, and is under the direct supervision of the Prevention CIP Coordinator and receives guidance from the project Lead Community Organizer.

  • Initiate and implement issue-based actions to engage new partners and increase the network of youth and adult volunteer base;
  • Develops and provides AOD/SUD/Advocacy presentations and workshops to “educate to action” by target communities on emerging campaign efforts;
  • Conducts comprehensive community assessments of the assigned target areas in SPA 8, South Bay region;
  • Recruit, train, and guide youth and adult volunteers and advocates through community coalitions to advocate for the prevention health, wellness, and policy campaigns;
  • Conducts coalition development, leadership advocacy skills building efforts, and facilitates community coalition meetings and training;
  • Mobilizes community stakeholders, residents, city and regional partners around alcohol, and other drugs (AOD) prevention advocacy and policy actions;
  • Educate, inform, cultivate, and navigate AOD issue awareness and support from City, County, and State decision-makers and City staff;
  • Provide recommendations to contract plans according to the emerging community needs, issues, and problems;
  • This field-based position requires personal vehicles to transport supplies, media, and equipment to and from community sites.
  • Coordinates broad AOD policy and advocacy support in regional (SPA and County) and statewide efforts to reach collective impact prevention goals;
  • Provide technical assistance to other organizing bodies as assigned.
  • Participate in county-based roundtables and other coalition-based meetings.
  • Conduct advocacy around local, state, and federal policy decisions.
  • Comply with City, County, State, and Federal contractual agreements.
  • Submit billing reports and other reporting requirements as assigned.
  • Maintain accurate files on organizing activities and evaluations.
  • Provides contract support on key budget line items.
  • Attend Unit and Agency-sponsored meetings and functions.
  • Represent AADAP at local, state, and federal forums, conferences, and other activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred Skills

  • Bilingual or bicultural capabilities with Los Angeles County threshold languages: Arabic, Armenian, Cantonese, Farsi, Urdu, Khmer (Cambodian), Korean, Mandarin, Russian, Spanish, Tagalog, Vietnamese, Japanese, Samoan, Tongan, Hawaiian and or other AAPI languages.
  • Fluent in Spanish (verbal and written)
  • Knowledge of substance abuse (particularly alcohol, tobacco, marijuana and prescription drugs) and related issues
  • Knowledge and understanding of the South Bay region
  • Experience with research and evaluation methodologies

General Requirements and Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA’s):

  • Permanent resident or U.S. Citizen; proof of work eligibility upon hiring.
  • Valid California Driver's License and personal vehicle insurance
  • Must have three (3) years of recovery or a drug-free lifestyle as of the date of the application.
  • Must provide proof of full vaccination and 1st Booster against COVID-19 upon hiring.
  • Ability to get along well with others, be punctual, pleasant, and tactful with professional appearance and conduct.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, clients and their families, community organizations, and the general public.
  • Ability to be culturally competent in age groups, gender identity, sexual orientation, spiritual beliefs, socioeconomic status, and diverse cultures.

Physical Requirements:

Moderate Duty

This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time, bend, stoop, squat, twist, reach, work on or irregular surfaces, occasionally lift objects over 25 pounds, and frequently lift 10-25 pounds. Ascending and descending ladders and staircases will be more frequent. For example, this position frequently moves and organizes agency supplies to outreach sites.
