Position Summary:
To oversee the Aberdeen High School library/multi-media center; assist staff and students on the proper use of library resources and manage technological resources available for use in the library/media center and the jr. high school 1:1 device program.
Primary Responsibilities/Duties:
- Assists teachers in the selection of books and other instructional materials, and makes media center materials available to supplement the instructional program.
- Monitors library budget, implements correct purchasing procedures and oversees expenditures.
- Maintains a comprehensive and efficient automated computer circulation system for the cataloging of all media center materials; assists teachers, educational assistants and students on the use of the system.
- Monitor assigned activities and/or program components (e.g. program budgets, student records, purchasing, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring compliance with financial, legal, and /or administrative requirements.
- Provides training and assistance to students on effective use of library/media center to develop research and information access skills.
- Review, evaluate, select and order learning resource/multi-media materials in accordance with the district selection policy. Maintain the inventory of the collection.
- Manage the circulation and retrieval of library materials with computerized and/or manual checkout and cataloging systems.
- Plan and implement processes for the distribution and storage of media material and equipment.
- Oversees learning resource/multi-media LRCs/para-educators in the performance of their duties.
- Supervises student workers for the purpose of ensuring appropriate class credit and/or learning experience.
- Maintain library/media center collection by identifying materials for repair, discarding and rebinding.
- Establish, implement and monitor standards of behavior in library/media center to provide a positive and productive learning environment.
- Communicate with students, parents and staff in an open and positive manner to provide guidance and encouragement in student achievement.
- Maintain various fiscal information (e.g. budget, purchase orders) for the purpose of updating information and complying with fiscal requirements.
- Prepare and maintain required records and reports.
- Attend and/or participate in all required staff meetings, trainings, and other activities required by the principal and district.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education/Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree, Certificate, or 5 years’ related experience
- WSP and FBI Criminal Justice Fingerprint Background Clearance
- Bilingual/Spanish speaking preferred
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Experience as a librarian or multi-media coordinator at the secondary level preferred.
- Ability to provide the leadership and/or participation necessary to ensure that the library media computer program is fully integrated into the school’s curriculum goals.
- Ability to provide the necessary guidance that results in the effective use of the library media center.
- Ability to organize and supervise clerical assistance, student aides, and a parent volunteer program.
- Knowledge of and ability to use and maintain all forms of audiovisual equipment.
- Possess the management and organizational skills necessary to set up and maintain a school library; must demonstrate strong organizational skills.
- Ability to assist teachers develop and assign lessons using support materials.
- Ability to use a computerized circulation system, catalog and information retrieval technology.
- Experience initiating a library/literature enrichment program for students.
- Ability to schedule and manage library schedule and program to meet classroom and student needs.
- Willingness to assist with staff learning opportunities related to new technologies, use and production of a variety of media.
- Provide access to information and ideas by assisting students and staff in identifying informational resources outside the school.
- Ability to systematically develop a collection of resources within the school and access resources outside the school.
- Commitment and ability to plan and work with a full range of students including gifted, mainstreamed special education, transitional bilingual students and students from diverse cultural and social backgrounds.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents and colleagues, orally and in writing.
- Ability to work with students in multi-aged groups.
- A strong and positive attitude that each student can learn and has the right an capacity to achieve personal academic excellence.
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff and the general public.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with studends, peers and parents.
- Regular and reliable attendance is required for the purpose of maintaining program standards and supporting student achievement.
