                                                                                               JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION:               Ophthalmic Technician           

REPORTS TO:         Ophthalmic Tech Manager

JOB SUMMARY:    Perform extensive number of data collection functions as delegated by the physician for proper professional diagnosis of patients’ conditions.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

1.    High School diploma

2.    One or more years experience as Ophthalmic or Optometry Assistant

3.    Certified Ophthalmic Assistant preferred

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1.    Demonstrated comprehension of Ophthalmic Technician skills outlined by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology  

2.    Strong communication and interpersonal skills

3.    Problem solver with analytical skills.

4.    Personable and empathetic with patient’s needs and concerns

5.    Well-organized with attention to detail

6.    Ability to work as a team member

7.    Demonstrated computer literacy

8.    Demonstrated ability to perform comprehensive patient history-taking and exams

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.    Communication & Patient Responsibilities

             a.    Obtain patient history to include chief complaint, history of present illness, past history (ocular and general), family history
                    (ocular and general), and history of allergies and medications.

b.    Performs accurate and consistent documentation and measurement testing including 

          i.    Visual Acuity

          ii.    Manual Lensometry

          iii.    Confrontational Visual Fields

          iv.    Stereo Testing

          v.    Evaluation of Motility

          vi.    Pupil assessment 

          vii.    Color Plates

          viii.    Applanation Tonometry/Pascal

          ix.    Manual refraction

          x.    Angle Assessment

          xi.    Dilation of Pupils

          xii.    Contact Lens Evaluations

          xiii.    Other tasks specific to the physician needs as a result of new technologies

          xiv.    Maintain sanitary conditions in exam rooms

          xv.    Maintain replacement inventory PAR levels

          xvi.    Humphrey Visual Field

          xvii.    Topcon OCT 

          xviii.    Topcon Fundus Photos

          xix.    A-scan/IOL measurements

          xx.    Pachymetry
