What are the responsibilities and job description for the Legal Advocate position at Abuse & Rape Crisis Center?

The Abuse and Rape Crisis Center is seeking an individual to join our direct services team. Direct services include, but are not limited to, advocacy and accompaniment, counseling, support groups, hotline, emergency safe housing, transportation and child care. Services are provided to victims and survivors of domestic and sexual violence and other forms of interpersonal violence. This position, Legal Advocate, is primarily responsible for assisting victims through the legal system, both civil and criminal.

Under general supervision**, the Legal Advocate establishes and maintains a safe, supportive and empowering environment for victims and survivors of interpersonal violence. They effectively support ongoing and collaborative communication amongst all program staff, and is responsible for ensuring a trauma informed care environment.

The Legal Advocate provides general support to program participants and oversees adherence to program rules and expectations designed to promote client well-being and safety through a trauma informed approach.

**Like all of our positions, the Legal Advocate is part of a team and we all support one another and work together to help meet the needs of our clients and support of our staff.**

This position does work directly with clients and provides direct services such as hotline, on-call response, crisis counseling, criminal justice support/advocacy, and childcare. Training will be provided. Experience working one on one with adults and at-risk youth preferred. This position is full-time, 38 hours per week, benefits included.

Qualifications:

  • Paralegal, hotline experience or equivalent training with the legal system.
  • Two or more years of related experience in a human service field, college education, or previous training.
  • ARCC counselor/advocate training.
  • Organizational skills including management, office skills, and record keeping.
  • Writing and speaking skills.
  • Knowledge of and concern for victim issues.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Required clearances.
  • Ability to work independently with a strong sense of focus, task-oriented, non-judgmental, open personal qualities, clear sense of boundaries, and ability to establish rapport.
  • Proven ability to establish and maintain positive, ongoing professional relationships with program participants, co-workers and partner agency staff.
  • Knowledge of community resources for high-risk populations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Direct Services:

1) Provides the following direct services: Individual crisis counseling, follow up counseling, group counseling, information and referrals, criminal justice support/advocacy, emergency financial assistance, emergency legal advocacy, personal advocacy and Victims Compensation Assistance. Provides notifications to clients regarding ICC hearings for PFA violations.

2) Provides counseling, on-call and shelter coverage as needed in order to provide a continuity of services to clients.

2. General Duties:

1) Keeps accurate records and meets deadlines.

2) Systems advocacy as required.

3) Attends staff meetings.

4) Performs other duties as assigned.

Schedule:

  • 8 hour shift
  • On call

  • Do you have at least one year of experience working one on one with persons who have experienced trauma or who have been impacted by interpersonal violence?
  • Are you able to provide on-call (after hours) services, between 5 pm - 9 am nights and 9 am - 5 pm on weekends/holidays? On-call may include phone calls or in-person response and is approximately 5-6 shifts a month.
