What are the responsibilities and job description for the School Counselor (High School) position at Academy of Saint Elizabeth?
The Academy of Saint Elizabeth, a private, Catholic, independent college preparatory school for young women, founded and sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, seeks a School Counselor for the 2023-2024 school year. The primary responsibility of the School Counselor is to ensure that students perform their best academically, in addition to helping students navigate the educational, social, emotional and behavioral obstacles related to attending high school. The School Counselor, working collaboratively with the rest of the Counseling department, is responsible for promoting educational excellence and providing for the unique personal, social, emotional, academic, and career needs of all students.
Candidates should possess knowledge of principles and best practices of school counseling, excellent communication skills, be detail-oriented, discreet and resourceful, exhibit high-energy and enthusiasm, work collaboratively with colleagues and have strong technological skills including experience with Google Suite and school platforms such as Blackbaud, PowerSchool, and Naviance.
Responsibilities and duties of the School Counselor include:
- Supporting the socio-emotional growth and development of all students in caseload, but especially those in need or in crisis;
- Meeting with each student in caseload at the beginning of the year in order to establish rapport and positive relationships and then periodically meeting throughout the year to monitor student’s academic and personal growth;
- Maintaining knowledge of the instructional and extracurricular programs of the school and utilizing this information in working with staff, students, and parents to enable students to obtain maximum benefit from their school experience;
- Acting as a liaison between parents, teachers, and students when necessary;
- Assisting in the coordination of standardized tests, midterm and final examinations, and placement tests;
- Working with the Director of Counseling, Principal, and Assistant Principal when referrals to community agencies are required;
- Serving as a liaison between the Admissions Department and Counseling Department;
- Working collaboratively with the Director of School and College Counseling on the college application process for students in caseload; and
- Promoting the Mission and Philosophy of the Academy at all times.
A bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate for this position is required as well as 2 years of experience in school counseling.
