What are the responsibilities and job description for the Navigator - Shelter Support Services position at Access Community Action Agency?
JOB SUMMARY: In support of the Access mission and Strategic Commitments, the Navigator - Shelter Support Services will provide comprehensive support services to shelter guests through the Housing Problem Solving lens, coordinate services across the homeless response system, and organize educational training/workshops for all shelter residents.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS and DUTIES:
- Provide comprehensive support services to shelter guests through a Housing Problem-Solving lens
- Complete initial screening and intake for new shelter guests within four days of entry
- Create a housing plan within fourteen days of entry, which creates a pathway to permanent housing
- Utilize Housing Problem Solving best practices
- Track and report data, as required, through HMIS (Homeless Management Information System)
- Provide housing search assistance and landlord/tenant mediation to secure guest housing
- Conducting apartment viewings and inspections
- Coordinate services across the homeless response system
- Provide resources and referrals to guests to community providers
- Act as a liaison between guests and other identified homeless response programs (such as Rapid Rehousing or Homeless to Housing)
- For families with minor children, monitor school attendance and compliance with the federal McKinney Vento Act
- Organize educational training/workshops and plan activities for all shelter guests
- Organize tenancy education, financial literacy, and other workshops for guests with community partners or Access staff
- Recruit volunteers to plan creative activities for guests
- Be an advocate for Access in the community
- Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience*
- Working knowledge of issues that affect a homeless population or lived experience of homelessness
- Ability to work independently with minimum supervision and as part of a team
- Must obtain (within three months of hire) and maintain the following certifications: Housing Problem Solving, Mental Health First Aid, Mandated Reporting, General First Aid
- Must be flexible and self-motivated
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines
- Ability to organize and prioritize work
- Ability to remain calm in stressful situations
- Ability to manage uncooperative clients
- Ability to work independently and identify and solve problems
- Patient demeanor with the ability to relate to, empathize with, and show compassion for a diverse group of individuals or families
- Effective problem-solving skills
- Proficient in electronic mail, internet browsers, word processing, and spreadsheet-related software
- Proficient in the software needed to maintain records and prepare reports
PREFERRED EDUCATION, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Working knowledge of Google Workspace
- Bilingual English/Spanish preferred (but not required)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Light Work: Lifting no more than 20 pounds occasionally and up to 10 lbs frequently. It frequently requires continuous standing, walking, and sitting and consistent use of either hand or foot controls.
- Occasionally required to read and comprehend complex grant documents, program plans, and agency policies and procedures
- This position requires the ability to transport oneself in and out of the offices and into off-site environments the agency can not control
