Job Summary
The Clinic Assistant includes nursing assistants, clinic aides, health aides, etc. The Clinic Assistant will assist in the school health program as determined by a school nurse, school health coordinator, and/or building administrator.
Essential Duties
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. - Administers first aid to students and staff by following the guidelines contained in the First Aid Flipchart for School Emergencies from the Virginia Department of Health.
- Assists with vision and hearing screenings and related tasks, such as, recording results, sending letters to parents/guardians under the direction of professional staff.
- Assists in the maintenance of medical records and daily logs of clinic visits.
- Administers medications and treatments as delegated by the building administrator, after receiving the required training by a registered nurse according to the Virginia Department of Health Roles and Responsibilities for the Safe Delivery of Specialized Health Care.
- Reports sensitive situations and/or extensive injuries/illnesses to the supervising school nurse, school health coordinator, or building administrator immediately.
- Works under protocols established by school nurse.
- Utilizes the nursing components of the SNAP computer system as directed by the school nurse.
- Attends or completes ongoing professional development.
Other Duties
- Communicates with parents via telephone regarding student health problems.
- Maintains the health office.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by school nurse, school health coordinator or building administrator.

Minimum Qualifications
- High school graduate with a valid CPR certification and First Aid.
- CNA, CMA or EMT preferred.
- Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and parents.
- Must be able to work appropriate computer systems
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Demonstrates basic reading, writing, and computation skills.
- Have good physical and emotional health.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone and enter data into a computer; see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors, and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors, and on the telephone; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds; and to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk, and reach overhead.
Work Environment
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
Duties are normally performed in a school/classroom environment. Duties may be occasionally performed on field trips away from school. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
