ASOP provides interactive workshops that help youth build essential life skills, leadership abilities, and personal growth. Role Overview

The Youth Support Counselor is responsible for providing 1:1 counseling and facilitating interactive sessions that help youth build social and emotional intelligence, leadership skills, life skills, and healthy coping strategies. This is a dual role where you offer therapeutic support and lead group-based activities, ensuring youth experience consistent guidance and meaningful personal growth. The role supports ASOP’s mission by maintaining an encouraging, engaging, and transformative environment for our participants.

This role requires experience providing 1:1 counseling support.


Highly preferred applicants possess one of the following credentials or are in their Associate status: LCMHC, LCSW, LMFT, LCAS, or Licensed School Counselor.


Reports to: Program Manager

Location: Self Talk Counseling and Consulting, 3126 Milton Road, Suite 234, Charlotte, NC 28215

Days and Hours: Tuesday through Friday, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Hours may fluctuate to fit program needs.


Compensation

Compensation is based on licensure status and experience. Unlicensed applicants are compensated at $30 per session. Associate licensed clinicians are compensated at $45 per session. Fully licensed clinicians receive $60 to $70 per session based on experience. Sessions primarily occur in the late afternoon and evening to meet the needs of the youth and families we serve.


Key Responsibilities


Therapeutic Support

• Provide 1:1 counseling for youth enrolled in ASOP programs.

• Maintain accurate therapeutic notes and documentation.

• Support crisis management and de-escalation when needed.

• Help youth build coping skills, emotional regulation skills, and healthy decision-making.

• Build strong rapport with ASOP clients and their families to support engagement, retention, and progress.


Program Facilitation and Engagement

• Facilitate interactive workshops aligned with ASOP’s mission and curriculum.

• Create a welcoming, supportive environment that encourages participation.

• Lead activities that strengthen healthy habits, leadership skills, and personal growth.

• Adapt content to meet diverse learning styles.

• Support additional ASOP programs as assigned.


Youth Development

• Build consistent connections with youth to support personal growth and accountability.

• Model ASOP’s core values in all interactions.

• Encourage youth to set and achieve personal and leadership goals.

• Support Ambassadors as they build leadership skills within ASOP and the community.


Program Coordination and Implementation

• Assist with planning and preparing session materials.

• Track engagement and youth progress across therapeutic and group settings.

• Collaborate with ASOP management to refine curriculum and service delivery.

• Support the Program Manager and Executive Director with administrative tasks as needed.


Qualifications and Skills

• Experience working with youth.

• Experience delivering 1:1 counseling is required.

• Strong facilitation and public speaking abilities.

• Exceptional rapport-building and relationship-building skills with youth and families.

• Adaptability, creativity, and strong problem-solving abilities.

• Effective communication and organizational skills.

• Ability to support outreach efforts and represent ASOP professionally.

• Familiarity with community resources is a plus.

• Spanish-speaking ability is a strong plus and preferred for serving bilingual families.


Education

A background in social work, counseling, psychology, education, communication, school counseling, or a related field is preferred. Equivalent youth program facilitation experience will also be considered.
