Job Description
The role involves working as a phlebotomist in an inpatient setting, where you will be responsible for various tasks related to blood draws and specimen management. You will greet patients, perform blood draws, label and centrifuge specimens, and update patient information. You will also be responsible for explaining procedures to patients, understanding physicians' orders, and ensuring accurate specimen handling.
Responsibilities
- Greet patients as they enter the lab and perform blood draws using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
- Label specimens and centrifuge them as required.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures.
- Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
- Explain the venipuncture process and other specimen collection processes clearly and courteously.
- Match laboratory requisition forms with specimen tubes and ensure 100% accuracy.
- Package specimens for transport and store them at the required temperature.
- Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and attend annual department training.
- Handle insurance, billing, and process samples efficiently.
- Provide excellent customer service to patients and handle telephone inquiries.
Essential Skills
- Proficiency in drawing blood and phlebotomy techniques.
- Strong customer service skills.
- Experience in venipuncture and specimen collection using straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Ability to process laboratory results and handle inquiries.
- Understanding of OSHA and DEP regulations.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED.
- At least 6 months of phlebotomy/venipuncture experience in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
- Previous customer service experience in any setting.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to take feedback positively and eagerness to learn.
- Patient-first mindset and a positive, hardworking attitude.
- Proven reliability and positive attendance record.
Work Environment
The position is based at a lab in Portland, OR, with a schedule of Monday-Friday, 6:00 PM-4:00 AM, including rotating weekends. The initial contract duration is 3 months, with potential extensions. The work environment is fast-paced, requiring attention to detail and adherence to safety protocols. Dress code guidelines are in place to ensure a professional appearance. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $21.85 - $27.00/hr.
