Actalent is currently seeking a qualified Technical Writer for a position with Bonneville Power in Vancouver, WA.
This Technical Writer position will provide support and assistance to the IT Asset Management and Engineering Applications organization (JLST) at Bonneville Power Administration (BPA). The role of the Technical Writer is to coordinate with Subject Matter Experts (SME) and various department representatives to draft, edit, and maintain system documentation, processes and procedures, and maintenance instructions in a technical environment.
- Confer with internal and/or external customers and Subject Matter Experts (SME) to establish technical specifications, and recommend materials to be developed.
- Observe production, developmental, and experimental activities to recommend operating procedure(s) and detail.
- Draft, document, edit, review, organize, publish, and present information consisting of requirements, design, business processes, policy, user manuals, reference manuals, and user-based scenarios (a workflow that describes all the steps, actions, and attributes taken to accomplish a specific task).
- Elicit requirements to understand complex business systems and interdependencies with the upstream and downstream systems and put these concepts into a form readable and understandable by individuals with varying backgrounds and technical/skill levels.
- Conduct technical interviews to obtain knowledge for documentation.
- Organize material and complete assignments according to set standards regarding order, clarity, conciseness, style, and terminology.
- Review published materials and recommend revisions or changes in scope, format, content, and/or methods of reproduction.
- Edit, standardize or make changes to material prepared by other writers or BPA staff as requested.
- Maintain records and files of work and revisions.
- Mark documents and maintain filing system(s), files, emails and records in accordance with compliance requirements. Share and disperse documents only to appropriate personnel (those with a need to know). Mark and maintain all official records in accordance with the Information Security (INFOSEC) and Information Governance & Lifecycle Management (IGLM) standards and procedures. Validate official records are accurately maintained for auditing purposes.
- Select photographs, drawings, sketches, diagrams, and charts for incorporation into documentation to illustrate material.
- Study drawings, specifications, mockups, and product samples to integrate and delineate technology, operating procedures and production sequence and detail.
- Communicate complex technical information effectively with a wide variety of technical and business experts in both individual and in group settings.
- Organize, refine, and recommend technical and functional concepts into a useful fashion.
- Write logical instructions:
- Decompose high-level information into details.
- Abstract up from low-level information to develop documentation, clarify requirements and organize library for use amongst project teams.
- Arrange for production, duplication, and distribution of material.
Qualifications:
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Information/Computer Technology, Business Systems or a related technical field is preferred.
- 5 years of experience is required with a Bachelor’s Degree in applicable fields.
- 7 years of experience is required with an Associate’s Degree in applicable fields.
- 9 years of experience is required without a degree or applicable degree.
- Demonstrated technical writing experience with an emphasis on information technology and business systems is required.
- 3 years of experience with the use and organization of Microsoft SharePoint for document management.
- 3 years of experience in the IT working environment explaining technical issues to a diverse range of technical and non-technical clients.
- Professional experience with the structure and content of the English language including, the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition and grammar. Experience must also include:
- Excellent writing skills and the ability to organize and present information in various forms such as textual, graphical, and statistical.
- Experience reading and understanding technical information and ideas presented in diagrams and/or writing.
