The Illinois Supreme Court is seeking a proven leader to serve as its next Supreme Court Marshal. This is a high-trust position responsible for the safety of the Justices, court staff, and facilities, as well as the protection of judicial independence itself. The ideal candidate is an experienced manager with demonstrated ability to lead a team and who brings strong law enforcement experience, exceptional judgment, and a calm, steady presence in high-pressure environments. The candidate must maintain Illinois POST certification, have a working knowledge of NCSC court security best practices, and be skilled at building strong relationships with law enforcement and intelligence partners. Above all, they must embody professionalism, discretion, and a deep respect for the mission of the judiciary.



KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as the chief law enforcement authority for the Illinois Supreme Court and lead the Office of the Marshal.
  • Direct all protective services, including security for Justices, judicial travel, residences, court sessions, and public events.
  • Develop and implement threat assessments and risk mitigation strategies across the judiciary.
  • Establish and maintain critical partnerships with local, state, and federal law enforcement, as well as fusion centers and intelligence agencies.
  • Maintain 24/7 readiness and personally oversee emergency response coordination and protective deployments.
  • Lead and manage the Court Security Information System (CSIS) and ensure timely collection, analysis, and reporting of threat intelligence.
  • Provide security consultations and training for courts statewide and support protective initiatives for appellate and circuit courts as needed.
  • Serve as a strategic advisor to the Supreme Court on all matters involving security, threat response, and law enforcement operations.
  • Uphold the highest ethical and professional standards in all interactions and responsibilities.


IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILE

  • Deep understanding of and commitment to the mission and independence of the judiciary.
  • Proven success leading a team and creating a positive and mission-driven culture in high-trust environments with sensitive, complex security responsibilities.
  • Exceptional at building trust and coordination with law enforcement and homeland security entities at every level.
  • Highly skilled in threat assessment methodologies, risk intelligence, and protective operations.
  • Calm, thoughtful, and decisive under pressure—able to command a room in a crisis without overreacting.
  • Clear and confident communicator, capable of briefing Justices, coordinating with senior law enforcement, and addressing the public or press when needed.
  • Professional demeanor with executive presence, discretion, and a reputation for ethical conduct.
  • Working knowledge of NCSC Court Security Best Practices and a record of applying them effectively in the field.
  • Able to mentor, train, and lead personnel within the Office of the Marshal and the broader judicial network.



REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Certified law enforcement officer in good standing with the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board (ILETSB) (POST-certified), or eligible for reciprocity.
  • Extensive and progressive experience in law enforcement, including executive protection, threat management, and organizational leadership.
  • Must maintain firearm qualifications, emergency response certifications, and all POST-mandated continuing education.
  • Must possess a valid Illinois driver’s license and maintain a safe driving record.
  • Must pass a comprehensive law enforcement background investigation.
  • Willing to work non-standard hours, including 24/7 availability, travel, and overnight assignments as needed.
