Summary:
Deseret Cattle & Timber is seeking a Cattle Unit Manager responsible for overseeing the daily operations of a cattle unit. This role ensures high standards in animal welfare, pasture management, and team leadership, while aligning with the strategic goals set by the General Manager. This is a key role in implementing best practices, maintaining infrastructure and fostering a safe and productive work environment.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee daily cattle care, rotating pastures, feeding, and health monitoring
- Manage pasture resources and implement grazing plans and pasture rotation schedules to support and improve forage resource s .
- Ensure cattle performance targets are met while staying within assigned unit budget
- Maintain accurate records for feed usage, cattle inventory, cattle treatments , antibiotic usage, and pasture moves . This will be done electronically.
- Create and execute a n annual enterprise resource plan that main tains and improves unit resources.
- C ommunicat e and work with supervisor, direct reports, other ranch staff to accomplish ranch objectives.
- Unde rstand and e nsure compliance with environmental regulations, safety standards and company policies.
- Be available to r espond to ranch emergencies such as weather events, animal issues, or equipment failures etc...
- Lead, train, and support direct reports to achieve operational excellence in cattle performance, resource management, safety and animal welfare and handling
- Be flexible and adaptable to pe r form other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in animal science, ranch management, or a related field or equivalent experience.
- 3 years of hands-on experience in cattle operations, with at least 1 year in a supervisory role.
- Strong knowledge of animal handling, pasture and range management, and ranch equipment.
- Proficiency in operating and maintaining machinery and ranch equipment .
- Effective leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Proficient and willin gness to learn technology like : Microsoft Teams, Excel , E mail , Microsoft C alendar and other company and ranch management computer programs.
- Ability to maintain and improve ranch infrastructure.
- Commitment and willingness to align with company mission, vision and ranch polic ies.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to work in remote outdoor environments.
- Must be able to sit, walk and stand for 9-to-12 hours per day.
- Must be able to work on a computer for 6-to-8 hours at a time.
- Must be able to ride a horse for 6-to-8 hours per day.
- Must be able to work outside in year-round weather conditions including heat, cold, and rain.
- Must be able to tolerate, and to perform castration, euthanasia, vaccinations, dehorning, ear tagging, ear notching, branding, taking blood samples, and other procedures normal to animal husbandry .
- Must be willing to work weekends and holidays when required.
