What are the responsibilities and job description for the Certified OR Scrub Tech or LVN position at AHS - Sherman Medical Center?

JOB SUMMARY: This position requires CST certification or LVN license. The OR Scrub Tech is directly accountable to the OR Charge Nurse and Director of Surgical Services and indirectly to the House Supervisor and the CNO/ Administrator. The OR Scrub Tech is responsible as the scrub assistant to the physician during surgical procedures. The OR Scrub Tech hands sterilized instruments, scopes and/or supplies to the physician during the procedure without unnecessary delay. Assist co-workers in the provision of continuous, quality patient care for adolescents, adults and older adults. Is responsible for adhering to regulations, standards, hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Participates in departmental Performance Improvement activities. Acts as a resource person for other personnel as appropriate.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING

1. High School Diploma or GED.
2. Must be Certified Surgical Tech or be grandfathered based on years of experience.
3. Current BLS certificate upon hire or must be obtained within 30 days.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Immediately informs physician, OR charge nurse and/or department director if supplies, instruments or equipment are not available or are not in good working order. Prepares surgical suite for procedure in a timely manner.
2. Hands and supports instruments and supplies to physician appropriately and in a timely manner anticipating needs.
3. Assures room has been cleaned from previous use.
4. Arranges equipment, supplies and instrumentation as appropriate for procedure and to maintain aseptic/sterile technique.
5. Monitors all instrumentation and equipment during use (e.g., electro-cautery instruments, light sources, etc.) for placement, settings and functioning paying attention to any and all audible alarms.
6. Is in compliance with information contained in the Infection Manual (i.e. OSHA blood borne pathogen standards, CDC Guidelines) and demonstrates appropriate use of personal protective equipment (e.g., gloves, gown, masks, and goggles) and hand hygiene techniques.
7. Demonstrates containment of contamination during and after procedure, appropriate disposal of sharps, separation of regular trash and contaminated trash. and appropriate handling of contaminated instruments (e.g., suctioning scopes, soaking in solution, covered and marked during transport etc.
8. Attends and maintains mandatory training in safe patient handling, trained in safe lifting techniques, includes but not limited to:
1) Appropriate use of lifting devices and equipment.
2) Five areas of body exposure: vertical, lateral, bariatric repositioning and ambulation.
3) Use of lifting devices to handle patients safely.
9. Avoids and prevents injury to self and patients by applying the principles of body mechanics. Maintains a safe environment, functioning with an awareness and application of safety issues within the unit/facility.
10. Communicates pertinent information to physician, co-workers (i.e., pictures printed, instruments needing repair or replacement etc.).
11. Consistently and appropriately performs universal protocol “time out” according to facility policy and uses two different patient identifiers before the transporting of the patient when needed.
12. Maintains current knowledge of advances in job-related technology and activities.
13. Performs other duties as assigned or required.
