JOB DESCRIPTION: School Bus Aide

POSITION SUMMARY:

  • The School Bus Aide is responsible for providing support within the student transportation services area with additional responsibilities for assisting special education students during transport to and from school and/or special activities; and ensuring the safety and sanitation of assigned vehicles.
  • Hiring for this position will be for the 25/26 School Year. 

Pay Increase to $19.11 - $24.99/hr is effective July 1, 2025. Any work completed prior to this date will be paid at a rate of $17.11 - 22.99 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The School Bus Aide:

  1. Assists passengers (e.g. students, special education students, etc.) for the purpose of providing safe loading and unloading from buses during normal transport and emergency situations. *
  2. Attends a variety of meetings (e.g. unit meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc.) for the purpose of gathering information required to perform job functions. *
  3. Maintains order and proper discipline of student passengers according to District policy. *
  4. Cleans assigned vehicles (e.g. picks up trash, helps wipe up spills, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring safety, appearance, and sanitation of vehicle. *
  5. Instructs students (e.g. safety requirements, actions to stop bullying, etc.) for the purpose of enforcing rules and regulations while maintaining student safety and well-being. *
  6. Prepares reports (e.g. incident reports, passenger misconduct, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, conveying information, and complying with established guidelines. *
  7. Maintains cleanliness of vehicles to ensure safe and sanitary operating condition. *
  8. Provides support for students riding the bus (e.g. homework, emotional support, etc.) for the purpose of helping students as needed during daily and special event bus trips. *
  9. Reports observations and incidents (e.g. discipline, accidents, inappropriate social behavior, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information to appropriate personnel for their action. *
  10. Secures students using special needs equipment (e.g. restraints, wheel chair tie downs, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the safety and well-being of students.*
  11. Follows the policies and procedures of the Transportation Department and the District. *
  12. Demonstrates a sense of professional responsibility, such as demonstrating ethical behavior; providing accurate data and reports when needed; meeting deadlines; maintaining confidentiality; caring for the equipment and materials; and dressing appropriately and presenting a good role model. *
  13. Other duties as assigned.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; preparing and maintaining accurate records; and operating equipment used in transporting special needs students.
  • KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math; understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: bus safety practices and procedures; and requirements for special needs students.
  • ABILITY is required to schedule activities and/or meetings; gather and/or collate data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with similar types of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires following prescribed guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; and working as part of a team.

Employment Standards:

  • Minimum of high school education or GED
  • Must pass physical examination as required by U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), Motor Vehicle Carrier Safety Regulations, 49 CFR 391.41 – 391.49. Physical may be required after severe illness, injury, or as supervisor’s discretion.
  • Must complete 10 Year Motor Vehicle Record Check.
  • Must pass criminal background check.

-                Body Mobility: use hands and fingers to feel, grasp, and manipulate small objects; manipulate fingers, twist and bend at the wrist and elbow; extend arms to reach outward and upward; use hands and arms to lift objects; turn, raise, and lower the head; occasionally stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.

-                Strength: to lift, push, pull and/or carry objects which weigh as much as 50 or more pounds on a frequent basis.

-                Environmental Requirements: encounter constant work interruptions; work cooperatively with others; work independently; work outdoors and indoors.

-                Mental Requirements: read, write, understand, interpret and apply information at a moderately complex level essential for successful job performance; math skills at a high school proficiency level; judgement and the ability to process information quickly; learn quickly and follow verbal procedures and standards; give verbal instruction; rank tasks in order of importance; copy, compare, compile, and coordinate information and records.

-                Additional Work Conditions and Physical Abilities: Requires travel to multiple sites.

EVALUATION

-       Evaluation of this position shall be by the Transportation Manager.
