Summary
The Albuquerque Academy Physical Plant Department is seeking an individual for the position of Journeyman Electrician. The Journeyman Electrician must have exceptional electrical knowledge and be capable of leading projects involving multiple electrical components and systems. They must be able to work independently and have the ability to think quickly on their feet, stay calm under pressure, and handle unexpected problems seamlessly. Essential Functions
- Coordinate work schedules in conjunction with the Maintenance Supervisor.
- Plan layout; install and repair wiring and electrical fixtures such as motors, generators, switches, circuit breakers, and fuse boxes.
- Inspect wiring and fixtures for conformance to school/campus specifications and local electrical codes.
- Install ground leads and connect power cables to equipment such as motors.
- Perform physically demanding tasks, such as digging trenches to lay conduit, and moving and lifting heavy objects.
- Adhere to production schedules and work hour requirements for completion of job assignments.
- Interpret specifications, blueprints, and job orders on assigned projects.
- Analyze and resolve work problems or assist co-workers in solving work problems.
- Test electrical systems and continuity of circuits in electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures using testing devices such as ohmmeters, voltmeters, and oscilloscopes to ensure compatibility and safety of the system.
- Diagnose malfunctioning systems, apparatus, and components, using test equipment and hand tools, to locate the cause of a breakdown and correct the problem.
- Inspect material for quality before installation.
- Confer with supervisors to coordinate work activities throughout campus.
- Ensure parts and materials are ordered, received, inventoried, and stored appropriately.
- Ensure proper transfer of equipment and material between job locations on campus.
- Operate a variety of hand and power tools and shop machinery in conjunction with
- proper training.
- Operate company vehicles, forklifts, and aerial lifts in conjunction with proper certification.
- Initiate or suggest ideas to achieve work goals.
- Provide work direction and guidance to employees to improve their skills.
- Ensure company policies and procedures are followed.
- Perform daily tasks in a safe manner in accordance with company policies.
- Demonstrate thorough familiarity with a current client, company, and OSHA safety.
- Ensure all employees follow proper safety procedures and policies.
- Inform Supervisors of all safety violations immediately.
- Responsible for all other duties as assigned on campus.
- Employees may be required to work extended hours (more than 8 hours per day), weekends, and holidays. Employees will be compensated based on guidelines in the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Qualifications
Education
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
Experience
- At minimum 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified is required. 5-7 years experience is preferred.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Knowledge of 480 Volt, 3 phase systems required as well as low and medium voltage systems, equipment, substations, and primary power distribution.
- Knowledge of National Electrical Code, NFPA-70E, OSHA 10-30, and the National Electrical Safety Code.
- Ability to use appropriate tools and diagnostic equipment to repair, install, replace, and test medium and low voltage electrical circuits and equipment.
- Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to trade.
- Ability to diagnose and repair electrical controls, industrial motor control centers, and programmable logic controllers for both primary and secondary systems.
- Ability to lead and/or train staff.
- Ability to read both commercial and industrial electrical blueprints and apply NEC, NFPA-70A, NESC, and OSHA 10-30 through the full range of commercial and industrial maintenance and construction work.
- Ability to read, understand, follow and enforce safety procedures.
- Ability to install and maintain motors, welding equipment, lighting fixtures, generators, circuit breakers, and transformers as appropriate to the position.
- Ability to isolate and repair defects in wiring, switches, motors, and other electrical equipment.
Special Requirements
- An Electrical Journeyman License (EL-1J) is required.
- A valid Driver’s License is required.
- An OSHA High Voltage Certificate or equivalent is preferred.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
Working Environment
- Majority of work is performed in an outdoor setting on campus.
- Work hours are generally from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Physical Demands
- Ability to handle heavy physical work, including heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling of objects up to 50 lbs. Physical work is a primary part (over 70%) of the job.
- Constant exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, and/or loud noises.
- Ability to handle exposure to potentially dangerous electrical currents and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and which may include use of protective equipment.
