Paralegal

ATL provides a full range of legal services for the Office of Civil Rights (OCR), Office of Justice Programs (OJP), United States Department of Justice (DOJ) in Washington, D.C. We provide all personnel required to perform all of the research and analysis tasks and functions.   The (OCR) is responsible for developing and implementing policies and procedures to ensure that recipients of Federal financial assistance from the Department of Justice comply with civil rights laws that prohibit them from discrimination against individuals in the delivery of services and in their employment practices. The OCR is also responsible for ensuring that recipients of financial assistance from OJP, the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office), and the Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) comply with applicable federal civil rights laws that prohibit recipients of DOJ financial assistance from discriminating against individuals in their employment practices or in the delivery or services or benefits. In addition to its civil rights enforcement responsibilities, the OCR provides staff support and legal and policy advice to the Review Panel on Prison Rape (Panel), which was established pursuant to the Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003 (PREA), 42 U.S.C. §§ 15601-15609 (2006) (Pub. L. No. 108-79, 117 Stat. 972).  Description of Paralegal Work Provide Legal Research Paralegals research legislation, regulations, and cases involving Federal civil rights requirements. They also perform legal research and analysis in support of staff attorneys. Paralegals search for legal precedents in computerized legal reference systems (LexisNexis, Lexis Advance, Westlaw, and/or Westlaw Next) and analyze their applicability. They then apply the results of this research to the specific problem or issue presented. Paralegals then draft summaries of research findings, check legal citations, and prepare correspondence. Provide Legal Data for Office Investigations and Compliance Paralegals collect, organize, and review complex factual material and other documentary data for office investigations and compliance reviews. Paralegals also perform legal research. Support Office Tracking Systems Paralegals develop and maintain knowledge of office management and complaint tracking systems. They develop and enter various case materials into office case information management system. Paralegals also maintain copies of frequently referenced office decisions, instructions, and resources, and access them electronically to provide to attorneys, as necessary. Support Attorney Investigative and Compliance Processes Paralegals locate and interview witnesses and perform other support activities to assist attorneys in investigating and conducting compliance reviews. Provide Administrative Support Paralegals perform assorted administrative duties, including scanning case documents and maintaining computerized filing systems, as necessary.
