Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Conduct Laboratory Testing: Perform various tests including TA, Brix, RI, density, refractive index, and color testing using a spectrophotometer.
  • Formulation Expertise: Understand nutritive and non-nutritive sweeteners and formulate to specific calorie counts per serving using various combinations.
  • Ingredient Knowledge: Understand vitamin and mineral active levels and formulate vitamin/mineral premixes using Excel. Unitize ingredients in beverage plant formulas for ease of use.
  • Extend Product Shelf Life: Identify ways to extend product shelf life and select appropriate processing parameters for different beverage systems, including pasteurization and preservatives.
  • Technical Skills: Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including the ability to create and manage spreadsheets. Calibration of lab equipment such as titrino, refractometer, and pH meters.
  • Lab Operations: Perform accurate weighing and mixing of ingredients, create sample labels and lab request sheets, and implement the ingredient replenishment protocol.
  • Compliance and Certification: Understand and implement company-certified programs such as HACCP, NSF, SQF, Food Defense, and Food Safety programs as required.
  • Processing Procedures: Familiarity with processing procedures related to labels and packaging of various sizes. Identify and distinguish between different products being made.
  • Quality Control: Understand the appropriate sequence of batch making and maintain good lab practices to ensure accuracy and consistency.
  • Other Duties: Undertake additional responsibilities as assigned by management to support team objectives.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in food science or a related field.

Experience: One to two years of experience in a laboratory setting, with beverage development experience considered a plus.

Skills:

  • High level of expertise in Microsoft Office – Word, Excel.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and follow-up skills.
  • Be able to demonstrate personal initiative, responsibility, and flexibility.
  • Ability to work under limited supervision and handle multiple assignments with limited time constraints.
  • Strong problem-solving and math skills.
