What are the responsibilities and job description for the Floating Custodian/General Maintenance - Landscaping position at Altoona Area School District?
OVERALL PURPOSE
This position is responsible for the care and maintenance of buildings and grounds, District-wide; make maintenance repairs; load skids for transportation to various buildings, load and unload truck, make deliveries; move equipment, materials, and supplies; operate forklift; erect ladders and scaffolding; remove snow and ice from walks and entrances across District; assist with preparation of school events and general maintenance work.
This position is required to conduct business in a professional and cordial manner that will uphold the integrity and reputation of the Altoona Area School District (AASD). This position maintains a thorough working knowledge of and adheres to the policies, regulations, and procedures of AASD.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (other duties may be assigned)
1. Must have a high level of motivation and be able to complete tasks without close supervision.
2. Maintain and care for the buildings and grounds, District-wide.
3. Mow lawns with hand or power mower and tractor; connect sprinkling equipment and water lawn and flowerbeds; collect and dispose of leaves and refuse.
4. Load and shrink-wrap skids for transportation to various buildings, utilize forklift; make deliveries and pick up loads with District vehicle; assist Central Supply as needed.
5. Perform custodial and laborer duties, throughout District, covering various shifts as needed.
6. Erect ladders and scaffolding, perform minor repair work; perform painting and maintenance work; clean uni-vents and oil motors.
7. Use equipment to remove snow from sidewalk, driveways, parking lots and patios; install chains or plows on equipment; spread salt.
8. Operate heavy powered equipment, such as lawn mowers, weed eaters, snow blowers, tractors, scrubbers, buffers, etc.
9. Report concerns with equipment repairs or malfunctions; ensure all equipment and District vehicles are safe, clean, and in good repair at all times.
10. Maintain logs for routine and scheduled maintenance - boilers, refrigeration equipment, etc.
11. Maintain inventory of supplies and report equipment in need of repair to building supervisors when working in various district buildings; ensure fuel is on hand and requisition replacement parts or items as needed.
12. Follow assigned work orders and schedules, respond to emergency calls as needed.
13. Perform on-call responsibilities to cover District needs and/or make repairs.
14. Must demonstrate mechanical ability.
15. Must be able to use a tape measure and do basic mathematical conversions.
OTHER DUTIES
· Must be able to use basic handtools.
· Assist with preparation for school events - setting up or removing tables, chairs, furniture, flags, signs, decorations, etc.
· Assume responsibility for opening and closing of assigned school or District buildings, as needed.
· Demonstrate regular and timely attendance.
· Perform any additional duties requested or required.
· Design landscape beds, select healthy plants, plant said plants, and maintaining beds thereafter.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE AND/OR TRAINING
· High School Diploma or GED, required.
· Vocational/trade school certification, agriculture or horticulture, preferred.
LICENSES OR CERTIFICATIONS
· Valid PA Driver’s License, required.
WORK-RELATED KNOWLEDGE
· Must have five (5) years of general maintenance experience.
· Basic knowledge and understanding of the principles of heating, ventilating, sanitation, and maintenance of the school plant.
· Prior landscaping experience is mandatory
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $17.66 - $19.66 per hour
