Simulation and Skills Lab Coordinator

Under the general supervision of the Director, Associate Degree Nursing acts as a liaison with the faculty and students in providing Simulation, Skills, and Science lab services to fulfill the needs of the nursing curriculum. Responsible for coordinating the use of the Simulation lab to assist the nursing students in critical thinking and applying theory to clinical. Responsible for the updating and maintenance of the simulation, skills and science labs. Develops and implements plans, policies and procedures for the labs. Maintains the appropriate inventory for the nursing laboratories and schedules lab practice. Assists science faculty in preparing for lab sessions to ensure necessary supplies are available.

INSTRUCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Effectively coordinates Nursing Skills, Simulation and Science Laboratory to meet curriculum needs:

• Assists faculty in developing supportive teaching tools (i.e. posters, handouts, clinical simulations) to facilitate student learning.
• Implements clinical simulation and skills activities as integral part of the curriculum.
• Develops, presents, evaluates, and refines scenarios utilized for simulation experiences utilizing role playing, props and dialogue to create a realistic learning environment.
• Develops new simulation experiences based on student or faculty identified needs and serving as a resource for faculty utilizing simulation in classroom/lab activities.
• Collaborates with faculty to develop clearly defined learning outcomes for skills and simulation activities.
• Supports faculty with laboratory instruction.
• Develops, reviews and revises, in collaboration with faculty, policies and procedures related to the safe usage of equipment and lab space.
• Assists faculty with feedback and evaluation of activities and procedures in the lab.
• Assists students in critical thinking to apply theory to managing patients in a clinical environment.
• Coordinates and assists in the integration of technology into the simulation lab such as IV pumps, cardiac monitors, and defibrillators.
• Oversees remediation exercises for identified students in coordination with faculty and retention specialist.
• Proctors the simulation activities.
• Provides individualized simulation activities based on student needs.
• Identifies and assists faculty in implementing ways to effectively increase the use of simulation in both formative and summative activities.

Participates in and contributes to the learning needs of students:

• Orients students to the clinical lab environment.
• Assists students in realizing course objectives through utilization of Simulation.
• Provides student progress feedback to instructors.
• Tutors students who require remedial assistance or additional assistance with learning.
• Utilizes instructional methods that promote student development of critical thinking, problem solving, decision-making, clinical competency and life-long learning.

Brings meaning to simulation through debriefing and reflection:

• Assists faculty in providing role expectations before the start of simulation.
• Reinforces specific teaching points.
• Utilizes the three domains of learning: cognition – knowledge, psychomotor – skills, affective – group dynamics, students’ feelings
• Employs different debriefing methods such as video capture of scenario, checklist, review of goals, peer feedback, recall of what happened.
• Provides input as needed during debriefing activities.

Maintains inventory of supplies for nursing labs:

• Communicates to faculty what nursing pack item will be needed for skills lab sessions.
• Determines the inventory needs for the Nursing Simulation Laboratory and coordinates the ordering of supplies.
• Coordinates the ordering and re-supply of consumable lab equipment; conducts quarterly equipment inventories, keeps inventory updated.
• Maintains the physical environment, including repair of equipment and laundry needs.
• Ensures the lab is clean, safe, and organized; promotes safe lab practices.
• Coordinates the repair of lab equipment as required.
• Coordinates the scheduling of the lab/equipment.

GENERAL SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Provides a laboratory environment conducive to student learning activities.
• Maintains lab records as required by faculty and accrediting bodies.
• Assists with program activities to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations, accrediting bodies, and College policies and procedures in concert with other American Career College campus programs.
• Reviews and recommends improvements and enhancements to effectively utilize simulation, skills, and other laboratory activities.
• Participates in student success activities such as providing additional learning opportunities in the skills lab.
• Serves as a mentor, role model and facilitator and provides guidance in the simulated clinical environment
• Follows proper procedures/channels of communication.
• Participates in professional development and organizations in order to remain current in the field.
• Maintains professional appearance for position.
• Collaborates with faculty to ensure learning objectives are met.
• Adheres to College policies and procedures and conducts job responsibilities in accordance with the standards set out in the College’s Code of Ethical Conduct, Compliance Agreement, Sexual Harassment Policy or any of its policies and procedures, applicable federal and state laws, and applicable professional standards.
• Maintains regular and timely attendance, reports to work as scheduled and assures time worked and/or time-off is recorded properly.
• Maintains confidentiality of all student, associate, and/or College information as required.
• Exercises care, proper use and maintenance of department equipment and supplies and identifies unsafe conditions and makes appropriate adjustments.
• Maintains order, cleanliness and safety at work.
• Communicates with IT personnel as needed regarding updates to software

EDUCATION:

High school graduate or equivalent required.

A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college which shall include courses in nursing, or in natural, behavioral or social sciences relevant to nursing practice.

A master's or higher degree from an accredited college or university which includes course work in nursing, education or administration preferred.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:

Current unencumbered California Registered Nurse License preferred.

Current CPR and ACLS cards preferred.
