Program Summary

67 Sueños is an Oakland-based youth organizing program with leadership development, artivism, and trauma-healing work at the center.

Summary Of Principal Responsibilities

The Youth Leads (YL) will work alongside two other YL and 67 Sueños staff to develop and co-facilitate their Ethnic Studies class at Rudsdale Continuation School and HYPHY afterschool program. The Youth Leads will mentor Oakland and Bay Area high school youth to connect with local coalitions that fight back against the policing and incarceration of BIPOC youth. They will support 67 Sueños staff leads in supporting and finalizing quarterly projects. The Youth Lead interns will prioritize utilizing art and cultural work as a primary form of youth programing and organizing.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities

The key responsibilities of the Youth Lead intern include the following:

  • Support in cocreating curriculum, agendas and facilitate weekly youth programming and coalition meetings.
  • Be an active member in 67 Sueños campaign coalitions by supporting Lead Organizer to mobilize 67 Sueños youth. Activities include, but are not limited to:
  • Free our Kids Campaign
    • Bi-Weekly Coalition calls
    • Weekly YCU prep Sessions
    • Monthly YCU Sessions
  • Justice For Mario Campaign
      • Participate in monthly meetings
      • Maintain communication with family 1 on 1’s
  • ICE out of California Coalition
    • Bi-weekly Coalition Calls
    • Serve as a youth mentor and role model to 67 Sueños program participants.
    • Support staff with increasing 67 Sueños social media presence and utilize social media to base-build, conduct outreach, and to highlight program and events.
    • Support staff in organizing and hosting digital and in-person events.

    Operations

    • Support staff in maintaining a well-organized digital library of youth curriculum, youth evaluation forms, youth permission slips, etc.
    • Maintain a well-organized digital calendar that outlines youth programming, campaign timelines, staff team meetings, etc.

    Experience

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Have background in youth programming (participated in an internship, after school program, youth organization, etc. as a high school youth for 1-2 years or more).
    • Have background in community organizing / social justice work with local youth of color (1-2 years or more).

    Other Required Skills And Abilities

    • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.
    • Have experience or a strong willingness to practice creative expression (poetry, music, visual arts, etc.) as a form of youth engagement.
    • Be familiar and aware of policy issues affecting youth regarding immigration, the criminal justice system, and local education.
    • Ability to work as part of a team and to be able to work independently.
    • Ability to mentor youth participants.
    • Practice non-violent communication and be committed to building healthy relationships with staff, youth, and community members.
    • Commitment to Quaker values and testimonies. Understanding of and compatibility with the principles and philosophy of the American Friends Service Committee including non-violence and the belief in the intrinsic worth of every individual.
    • Understanding of and commitment to the principles, concerns, and considerations of AFSC in regard to issues of race, class, nationality, religion, age, gender and sexual orientation, and disabilities. Demonstrated ability to work and communicate with diverse staff.

    COMPENSATION: $21.22 per hour at 18 hours per week for approximately 9 months– Non-Exempt. There are no medical, dental, or life insurance benefits, short-term or long-term insurance benefits with this position. AFSC does participate in unemployment, worker’s compensation, and social security.
