Intern, Investigative Reporting – APM Reports

Are you eager to kickstart your journalism career and help American Public Media produce important accountability journalism that informs and empowers our community? If yes, this internship is for you! APM Reports seeks ambitious self-starters ready to dig deep through research, sources, and data.

As the Investigative Reporting Intern, you will help our award-winning Senior Editor report a podcast about the pharmaceutical industry and assist the team on other investigative reporting projects to be determined.

Key Learning Goals

We want to build your investigative muscle. Through this internship, our goal is for you to leave this experience with an investigative mindset. You will learn the skills required to manage an investigation by helping journalists do key reporting work including:

  • Filing open records requests
  • Acquiring, organizing and analyzing data
  • Doing high-impact research
  • Conducting and processing interviews using audio recording and editing tools
  • Learn by participating in story discussion and by potentially reporting and writing stories

Responsibilities

  • Understand basic journalistic principles
  • Conduct research that will inform our reporting and connect with audiences
  • File and manage open record requests
  • Build and interview sources

Programming

  • Participate in a robust on-boarding experience
  • Professional development: on-the-job training, workforce readiness training, formal performance review feedback sessions, etc.
  • Participate in brown bag sessions to gain broader perspective of the organization

Required Qualifications

  • Enrolled undergraduate or graduate student, or recent graduates (within the past 18 months)
  • Must be able to work 40 hours per week (Monday – Friday, 9:00 – 5:00pm) for the duration of this internship
  • Must be able work in the office (St. Paul, MN)
  • At least one year of hands-on involvement in journalism-related activities with college newspapers, radio or TV news broadcast team or other media outlet
  • Demonstrated interest in investigative and accountability journalism, with a commitment to serving the public interest
  • Familiarity with spreadsheets (Excel or Google sheets)
  • Able to work on multiple projects at once
  • Understanding basic journalism ethics
  • Self-motivated, self-starter
  • Unafraid to make cold calls and speak with strangers

Preferred Qualifications

  • Data skills (e.g. Advanced Excel, Python or R)
  • Experience with audio (e.g. using a field recorder, ProTools)
  • Social media savvy (Instagram, TikTok, Threads)
  • Experience conducting in-depth research and communicating findings in writing
  • Experience with documentary or investigative reporting

  • Must be able to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

    • Required to move about in an office environment and sit for extended periods of time.
    • Required to move about in the community.
    • Frequent use of hands for data entry/keystrokes and simple grasping.

    • Moderate noise level.
