The main purpose of the Veterinary Technician is to assist veterinarians in the care of animals. At the Animal Clinic of Milford they may perform initial evaluation of the animal's condition, clip & cleanse wounds, check vital statistics, take blood pressures, perform cystocentesis, learn to take OFA and Penn hip rads, collect samples and administer medication, manage treatment plans on hospitalized patients, communicate to owners patient reports and discharge instructions etc. They also perform basic lab work, including urinalysis and blood tests, and may assist with procedures such as soft tissue, orthopedics, ophthalmic, and dentistry to name a few.
Requirements for this position are:
**Two years minimum as a veterinary technician.
Handling and restraining all types of patients that include dogs, cats, small mammals, and the occasional bearded dragon!
Able to place IV catheters, perform blood draws, assist with ultrasound, and taking radiographs.
- Performing diagnostic tests and X-rays
- Preparing animals and instruments for surgery
- Administering medications, vaccines, and treatments
- Providing emergency first aid or general nursing care
- Observing and reporting on the behavior and condition of animals
- Restraining animals for examination or treatment
- Administering anesthesia and assisting during medical procedures
- Collecting and recording animal case histories via our computer software EzyVet
- Educating animal owners on home care
- Performing lab blood work. (prepare samples to be sent to the lab (Antech) and or run in our in house lab)
- Be willing to learn the skills you have not yet learned to do well or become proficient at.
