Position Summary

The Operating Engineer is responsible for the daily maintenance and operation of the equipment/systems within the Physical Plant, as well as, monitoring of the main campus buildings for emergency response and climate control. In addition, the Operating Engineer is responsible for assisting maintenance and custodial personnel as needed. This position is designated as Essential Personnel. The incumbent is required to assist in meeting the operational needs of the College during emergencies and college closures, as well as, ensure continuity of strategic services. The employee is required to work 52 weeks per year including holidays except for earned annual and sick leave.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Perform the duties and responsibilities of an Operating Engineer:

Operate and maintain the Physical Plant equipment.

Monitor and respond to the fire alarm systems.

Complete a physical tour of the campus to monitor all building operations.

Provide a comprehensive written log reflecting all events during assigned shifts.

Review logs from previous shifts in order to address/monitor ongoing issues.

Assist in performing repairs as needed.

* Ensure that the boiler room is maintained in a clean and orderly manner at all times.

* Perform all duties in accordance with applicable safety codes and procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment as necessary.

* Respond to requests for emergency and routine facilities services, including maintenance and custodial services, during each shift. Respond to complaints, if unable to resolve notify the Lead Operating Engineer, Assistant Director or Director of the issue.

* Consult with maintenance mechanics concerning any changes to building HVAC systems, and note changes in the log.

* Assist Fleet Services with the issuance and/or return of college owned vehicles during off hours. Assure vehicles are fueled, secured, cleaned and parked as necessary.

* Assist Facilities Maintenance & Operations with vendors, contractors and/or deliveries during off hours.

* Function as liaison between Facilities Maintenance & Operations and appropriate vendors to ensure maintenance of HVAC and fire alarm systems.

* Provide Facilities Maintenance & Operations emergency support as needed.

* Assist with snow removal around the Physical Plant and as needed.

Required Qualifications:

High School diploma or the equivalent and a Maryland First Grade Stationary Engineer's license required.

A minimum of one year of experience in electrical, plumbing, heating, cooling and general maintenance and repair is required.

Working knowledge of computerized building automated systems is required

Ability to work flexible hours and accept the Essential Employee designation.

Demonstrated ability to work under the following conditions and meet the following physical requirements:

Ability to push, pull, lift and carry up to 50 lbs. throughout an 8 hour shift.

Ability to work outdoors in varied weather condition, such as heat, cold, rain, snow and slippery conditions.

Ability to work on uneven surfaces.

Ability to utilize lifts, ladders and/or scaffolding to work at elevated heights.

Possess a valid driver's license and good driving record as determined by college policy.

Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated ability to professionally assist and interact with culturally diverse students, faculty, staff and the public
