We're hiring a Medical Assistant to join our outpatient dermatology clinic in Knoxville, TN. The Surgical Medical Assistant will assist Physicians and other Providers with surgical procedures and patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Job Summary: As a Surgical MA , you will play a crucial role in providing comprehensive patient care and support within a clinical, surgical setting. Your responsibilities will encompass various tasks, including escorting patients, collecting vital information, preparing procedure rooms, assisting during surgical procedures, and ensuring adherence to company policies and HIPAA regulations.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Escort patients to the exam/procedure room. Assist patients as needed with walkin g . C ollect patient information/history; take vitals, and perform screenings per provider guidelines.
  • Prepare paperwork for the patient’s current visit and ensure complete and accurate documentation within the patient’s electronic medical record.
  • Complete pre-operative intake via a one-on-one interview with the patient, explain surgical procedures , and answer any questions within your scope.
  • Prepare procedure rooms and surgical trays with all supplies needed for procedures.
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures in adherence to HIPAA regulations.
  • Drape and disinfect the surgical site, administer an injection of local anesthesia, and use a handheld cautery device to achieve hemostasis .
  • Assist the physician during all procedures (passing instruments, blotting, cutting sutures, etc ).
  • Bandage surgical sites, prepare proper discharge paperwork, review wound care instructions with patients , and answer any questions or concerns they may have.
  • Clean and prepare instruments for terminal sterilization in an autoclave.
  • Collect and accurately process specimens.
  • Prepare pathology and lab specimens. Route to correct lab as required by patient’s insurance. Maintain accurate pathology log.
  • Remove sutures.
  • Notify patients of pathology and lab results.
  • Respond to patient questions in the office and on the phone as instructed.
  • Schedule or re-schedule appointments with providers, specialists as necessary. Send appropriate records as necessary.
  • Maintain medication samples, discard out-of-date supplies, and keep appropriate records .
  • Maintain infection control. Maintain cleanliness of exam rooms, and keep supply cabinets well stocked.
  • Document all medical instructions given to patients .
  • Other duties assigned as deemed necessary by management .

Qualifications

  • At least 1 year of recent experience as a Surgical Assistant, Medical Assistant, LPN or other clinically based patient care experience (highly preferred)
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant, Certified Nursing Assistant, Surgical Tech, LPN or B achelor’s degree program in a pre-med or pre-physician’s assistant track (required)
  • Thrives in a fast-paced environment and able to work well within a team
  • Professionalism and strong customer service skills is a must
  • Able to communicate with doctor clearly and concisely
  • Able to communicate with patients and co-workers in a professional and friendly manner
  • Must be able to lift at least 15 pounds, stand for prolonged periods (i.e. an hour at a time) and use a step stool

Licensure/Certifications/Education

Education And Experience

  • High School Graduate or GED required.
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant Program, Certified Nursing Assistant program or completion of a bachelor’s degree program in the pre-med or pre-physician assistant track preferred.
  • CPR certified preferred.
  • 1-2 years of recent experience as a Medical Assistant, Certified Nursing Assistant, or other clinical patient care experience preferred.
  • Previous experience in Dermatology is preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Standing and walking for extended periods of time
  • Moderate amount of talking, bending, twisting, reaching, and balancing.
  • Use of hands and fingers.
  • Talking and listening in person and on the telephone.
  • Handling of materials such as paper, supplies, etc.
  • Lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds.
  • Risk of exposure to infectious organisms and the possibility of injury due to chemicals and sharp objects.
