Electrician

Overview

The Electrician is responsible for performing tasks that are basically electrical oriented and are typical of those tasks found in maintenance and/or construction.

Responsibilities

Plans preventive maintenance and installs, repairs, replaces, and tests electrical circuits, communications systems, emergency electrical generating systems, equipment, and appliances, using hand tools, power tools, and testing instruments.

Inspects, tests, and repairs electrical lighting, signal, communication, power circuits, motor starters and controls, and related equipment and devices.

Inspects, tests, and repairs electrical beds, suction pumps, fixtures, and appliances.

Inspects, tests, and repairs all elements of electrical distribution systems.

Installs, repairs, and maintains electrical machinery using testing instruments such as ammeter, ohmmeter, voltmeter, test light, or growler.

Repairs and maintains equipment such as air handling units, pumps, electric valves, fire alarm systems, ovens, ranges, mixers, industrial laundry equipment and other related equipment.

Reads blueprints, schematics and related type drawings and specifications to determine proper layout and accomplishment of assigned tasks.

Prepares detailed estimate of quantity of materials, supplies, and time necessary to accomplish assigned tasks.

Performs first echelon maintenance to equipment such as ice machines, blood banks, air conditioners, morgue, laboratory, medical and dietary refrigerators, dumbwaiters, elevators, tray conveyors and other related equipment. First echelon maintenance includes such tasks as replacement of relays, contacts, capacitors, controls, and/or cleaning of same.

May instruct other personnel in education of electrical job and tool safety and the field of electricity and provide instruction and direction to Electrician II.

Maintains work area in a safe and orderly manner.

Conducts safety checks for all equipment that may be in the patient environment.

Performs assigned tasks with either hand or power tools and in accordance with written or oral instructions.

Selects stock, tools, and supplies for assigned tasks.

Loads and unloads stock, tools, and supplies from vehicles.

Stores stock, tools, and supplies in their assigned location.

Operates vehicle as required and maintains a maximum/minimum stock system of supplies and tools on vehicle.

Maintains ongoing knowledge of appliance codes pertaining to hospitals and the electrical field.

Completes sections of service requests, work requests, and/or project forms such as time and date started, time and date completed, and materials used.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED equivalent

AND

Must have four (4) years experience in the electrical field. The four (4) years can be one of the following:

A. A combination of the successful completion of one (1) year in a technical school and three (3) years experience in the electrical field. Each 100 hours of technical school over the required 1300, may be substituted for one-half (1/2) year work experience.

B. Successful completion of a four (4) year apprenticeship program in the electrical field.

C. Job related experience in functional area equal to 4000 hours.

D. Needs to maintain Journeyman license or Masters license to qualify for job grade 14 pay rate.

Technical school(s) must be a combination of classroom study and shop experience. The course should contain no less than 1300 hours and includes such subjects as fundamentals of electricity, mathematics, applied science communication skills, human relations, meter controls, construction wiring, electronic motor controls, switchboard, A.C. motors, D.C. motors, electrical maintenance, meters, measuring instruments, transformers, blue print and schematic reading, specification preparation, and use of hand and power tools.

Cooperative education programs where the student receives on-the-job experience with business and industry may be substituted for shop experience.
