Bacteriophage Research Scientist - Kennesaw, GA
This is a full-time, exempt position.
Nature and Scope:
The Bacteriophage Research Scientist will work, under minimal supervision of the Director of R&D, on various research projects revolving around the isolation, characterization, design, and production scale-up of novel bacteriophages. The Bacteriophage Research Scientist will be responsible for facilitating collaborative efforts between organizations (e.g., internal research groups, contract research organizations, university researchers, and etc.) to ensure accurate, precise, reproducible, presentable, and publishable works. A successful candidate will be expected to exhibit individual initiative, work independently, be technically proficient and accurate, effectively communicate in both written reports and presentations, initiate, and ensure compliance with applicable safety procedures, and possess strong attention to detail.
Major Accountabilities:
The responsibilities of a Bacteriophage Research Scientist include, but are not limited to the following:
General Responsibilities
Record, interpret, and present results to senior colleagues, customers, and vendors
Initiate and ensure compliance with applicable safety procedures
Maintain familiarity with current scientific literature and contributes to the process of a project
Develop, as warranted, prototypes for range of products based on company’s technology
Other duties as assigned.
Local travel (<4 miles between sites): 50-75%
Out of state travel: Occasional (<10%)
Key Responsibilities
Contribute to bacteriophage development from project inception to completion/revenue generation
Improve and expand company’s knowledge of new phages/technologies for new and existing markets as applicable
Collaborate with industry professionals to expand new application development opportunities
Provide leadership, motivation, and performance-based culture within the science and technology team
Develop, improve, validate, and implement new product development via technology-based solutions
Contribute ideas and concepts to initiate or advance projects
Carry out routine tasks and follow strict methodologies to carry out analyses
Research Responsibilities
Screening, selection, and isolation of bacteriophages towards specific bacteria and/or pathogens based on market
Characterization of bacteriophages (including lytic vs lysogenic, functionality, host specificity, potential toxicity, and lysin strength)
Host bacteria culturing and design through natural mutagenesis to reduce toxicity
Optimization of production and scale-up conditions including fermentation and drying
Protein purification from phage lysates
Education
Minimum – Master’s degree; preferred in microbiology, biology, biochemistry, or a related field
Preferred - PhD
Experience
Minimum 1-3 years relevant experience
Specific skills
Experience in phage research
Superior analytical skills plus demonstrated skills to handle a variety of assignments simultaneously.
Results driven, strong work ethic
Strong organizational and time management skills.
Requires excellent written and verbal communications.
Ability to work successfully in a cross functional matrix. Sales, marketing, finance, Quality etc
Desirables
Cell culture experience
Bioinformatic skills would be an advantage
Experience in protein expression, production and purification
