Recreation Counselor

Job Summary:

The Recreation Counselor works with and supports participants, including children and young adults with disabilities, to ensure a rewarding and safe summer experience while providing innovative recreational, educational, and social opportunities.

Requirements:

• 
  Must complete background checks as required, including OPWDD/Justice Center fingerprinting, child abuse and sex offender registries.
• Completion of all required trainings and refreshers
• Able to monitor the activities of participants who have varying abilities and disabilities.
• Meet the physical demands (walking, running, bending, lifting, and assisting campers with meals, washing hands, toileting, exerting 50 pounds of force to assist with lifts, transfers, and other hygiene needs)

Essential Functions:

• 
  Communicate with participants, coworkers, management and visitors with dignity and respect.
• Ensure the safety of participants throughout the day by remaining aware and alert of the environment, weather conditions, dynamics of participants and coworkers as trained.
• Assist in providing personal care to participants per training; personal care may include but is not limited to changing of clothing, eating and drinking, hand washing, toileting, lifts and transfers and other hygiene needs.
• Expediently report any injuries, illnesses or incidents
• Maintain line of sight with assigned participants continuously
• Follow participants’ safeguards and ask questions if clarity is needed.
• Facilitate games and activities during the day as directed.
• Assist with maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the recreation area.
• Report any safety issues or concerns immediately.
• Apply first aid as needed per American Red Cross training.
• Report any incidents of abuse, maltreatment, or neglect and follow procedures as trained per the NYS Justice Center Mandated Reporter protocols.
• Uphold the Codes of Conduct and ethics as well as all ARISE policies and procedures.
• Exercise sound judgment as a matter of course and hold protected health information and other sensitive information in the strictest of confidence in accordance with ARISE and HIPAA policies.
• Other duties as assigned.
