What are the responsibilities and job description for the Postdoctoral Scholar - Experimental Fluid Dynamics position at Arizona State University?
The Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University (ASU) and the School of Engineering of Matter, Transport and Energy seek applicants for a post-doctoral scholar position in experimental fluid dynamics (research background in wall-bounded turbulent flows, aerodynamics, and image-based velocimetry techniques (PIV, PTV, OFV, etc). The School of Engineering of Matter, Transport and Energy, one of the eight Fulton Schools, houses the CMAT lab which focuses on using advanced experimental techniques to study turbulent boundary layer flows on complex surfaces, turbulent mixing, and turbulent multiphase flows. We seek applicants who complement our abilities in these areas to solve grand challenges as part of a community of experts. Interested candidates with expertise in Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) techniques and a familiarity with microcontrollers and electronics are particularly encouraged to apply.
The Primary Job Duties Include
- Designing bespoke experimental instrumentation, performing detailed boundary layer measurements to understand separation over complex surfaces.
- Analyzing the results and leading the scientific dissemination efforts.
- Other responsibilities include mentoring graduate and undergraduate students in their day-to-day research activities in the capacity of a senior researcher, participating in professional development activities such as interactions with sponsors, assisting in grant writing, etc.
- It is expected that in this position, the candidate will develop as an independent researcher by gaining experience in student mentoring, project management, and developing independent research directions, under close mentorship from Dr. Pathikonda.
Required Qualifications
- Earned doctorate in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, or related discipline by the time of appointment: Ph.D. must be obtained within the past four years.
- Excellence in experimental research related to turbulence and wall-bounded flows/aerodynamics, evidenced by publications.
- Expertise in using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) or related techniques for turbulent flows, evidenced by publications.
- Familiarity with electronics and instrumentation, microcontrollers, and circuit building.
- Strong communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills.
