JOB DESCRIPTION: DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WORK Arlington Public Schools is seeking two candidates to each fill a full-time (1.0 FTE) position.
The assistant principal, working under the general direction of the principal, will be responsible for an equal share of the general administrative duties required to effectively and efficiently operate a senior high school within the context of a team approach.
Included in the responsibilities of this position are staff and teacher evaluations, monitoring of progress for assigned students, student discipline and supervision, help with inventory, school buses and transportation, budget responsibilities, hall and cafeteria monitoring program, and other responsibilities as assigned by the principal. - Promote an effective and efficient instructional environment by giving and receiving information and assistance, resolving conflicts, providing for safety, cooperative and collaborative efforts.
- Carry out a variety of administrative responsibilities including budget and fiscal procedures, disciplinary procedures, and community relations.
- Assist in the preparation of a variety of reports, forms, and surveys, and in the maintenance of inventory and other records.
- Assist in the observation, evaluation, and training of faculty and staff.
- Assist the principal in the coordination of the planning and work of department or grade level chairs.
- Work with the principal and other assistants in the design and implementation of new programs to benefit and enrich student learning.
- Maintain communications and liaisons with parents and the community.
- Assist in monitoring student attendance and grading procedures.
- Assist in coordination and supervision of operational and support services activities such as transportation, student activities, fire drills and other emergency procedures, community use of buildings and building maintenance.
- Make recommendations for hiring and terminating employees.
- Plan and supervise special events such as assemblies, parent workshops, staff development, orientation for students, staff and parents.
- Develop curriculum and/or provide supervision for specific programs.
- Assist in supervision of security and custodial staffs to promote school safety.
- Attend professional meetings, workshops and conferences for professional development.
- Participate in special education meetings for eligibility, I.E.P. procedures and student studies.
- Perform related duties as required or assigned by the Principal. EXPERIENCE: PREFERRED QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
- Bilingual skills preferred but not required.
- Experience working with students, families, and staff from various cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
- Possess knowledge of best practices in instruction, and the ability to provide instructional leadership.
- Possess skills and the ability to apply these in a variety of situations with students, parents, staff, and members of the at-large community.
- Possess general knowledge of special education procedural requirements.
- Possess knowledge of the principles of effective supervision.
- Understands and works productively with adolescents.
- Possess knowledge of the role of technology in effective instruction.
- Possess the ability of working effectively with students, teachers and parents as part of an administrative team.
- Understand adolescents and be able to work productively with them.
- Possess a basic knowledge of the principles of effective supervision.
- Have the ability to work effectively with students from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds.
- Experience in applying principles from research on restructuring schools to improve student achievement.
- Have a desire to exercise administrative leadership skills needed to effect optimal student performance.
- Have successful experience in developing and implementing minority achievement activities.
- Possess excellent human relation skills and the ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing QUALIFICATIONS: QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
- Hold or be eligible for the Postgraduate Professional Certificate issued by the Virginia State Board of Education with endorsement in Administration and Supervision PreK-12
- Have a minimum of three years of successful teaching experience, or three years of combined administrative and teaching experience within the past five years.
