What are the responsibilities and job description for the Language Arts Instructor position at Art of Problem Solving?
Art of Problem Solving (AoPS) develops educational opportunities for many of the most eager students in the world. Since 2003, we have trained tens of thousands of the country's top students, including nearly all the members of the US International Math Olympiad team, through our online school, learning centers, textbooks, and online learning systems. Over the years, our international online community of advanced problem solvers has grown to over 800,000 members. While our primary focus has been math for most of our history, we have expanded into new subjects, such as language arts, science, and computer science.
The AoPS Academy in San Diego (Carmel Valley), CA is hiring part-time Language Arts Instructors for the upcoming academic year. We are looking for outstanding instructors experienced with teaching elementary or middle school language arts. Subbing opportunities are also available.
This position requires a minimum initial commitment of ~3 hours per week per class (including prep time). Most classes take place after 4:00pm on weekdays and throughout the day on weekends. NOTE: This is an in-person position at our San Diego (Carmel Valley) campus location. AoPS is strictly following CDC guidelines.
Job Duties:
Our teachers contribute greatly to the success of our students and are an integral part of our Academy family. This may be a great fit for you if you enjoy building relationships with talented students in a small classroom setting and making a direct impact on how they learn and approach language arts. We are seeking dynamic, enthusiastic teachers with a strong English background and diverse teaching experience.
- Teach the AoPS curriculum in dynamic, participation-oriented classes that focus on instruction and developing skills, not on rote memorization.
- Actively engage students in the course material throughout each class.
- Expertly manage a classroom of 12-16 students maximum.
- Dedicate some time before & after each class for preparation and debriefing.
- (Optional with extra pay) Grade students' work and substitute for classes from time to time.

Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in English, or a related field required. Master's/MEd/PhD preferred.
- Some experience working with advanced students, particularly in elementary or middle school, is strongly preferred.
- Availability to teach after 4pm on weekdays and during the day on weekends. Candidates with Friday evening and weekend availability strongly encouraged to apply.
- Candidates must be located in San Diego or the greater area and are able to commute to our campus.
