JOB TITLE: Chemist – QA/QC Lab ASARCO

POSITION OVERVIEW

Support the Specialty Lab and Main Lab of the Ray Mine. Ensure that data generated is accurate and delivered to the Sr. Lab Supervisor and appointed production departments in a timely manner each day.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Develop and demonstrate an understanding of the Mine, Mill, SX-EW, and Leach departments from which the daily production samples are collected.
• Maintain, operate, and comprehend lab instrumentation, such as FAAS, XRF, XRD, DC-Arc OES, FT-NIR, and other analytical equipment.
• Maintain the quality of the assay results produced in the Specialty and Main lab through QA/QC analysis and controls.
• Communicate with the Snr. Lab Supervisor on the status and quality of materials/reagents.
• Promote/maintain safety and good housekeeping in the lab area.
• Document and follow all standard operating procedures (SOP).
• Generate and standardize analytical standards for instrumentation.
• Develop a thorough understanding of the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
• Order supplies and equipment using SAP.
• Cross train job on responsibilities.
• Council and train lab techs on SOPs when necessary.
• Perform sample preparation using crushing, pulverizing, and homogenizing techniques.
• Prepare daily production samples for analysis.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

• Work with other departments on special projects as needed or assigned by the Snr. Lab Supervisor
• Adhere to the ASARCO Environmental, Safety and Health guidelines. • Maintain the Ray Lab upon the absence of the Snr. Lab Supervisor
• Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Strong interpersonal skills in developing team building.

• Must have good computer skills with working knowledge of MS Office applications.
• Ability to learn and use new software quickly.
• Must be able to manage time effectively, set priorities, and manage multiple tasks.
• A comprehensive understanding of the entire lab operation with respect to lab priorities pertaining to the various departments within the Ray structure of operations.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• BS in chemistry or equivalent science field within a science curriculum. Recent graduates welcome to apply.
• Preferably, knowledge of QA/QC lab procedures with experience in mining.
• Knowledge of OES, FAAS, XRF, XRD, titrimetric analysis, and statistical analysis.

ENVIRONMENTAL, HEALTH & SAFETY

• The job requires training or instruction in the area of Environmental Awareness.
• The job requires training or instruction in the area of Safety & Health awareness including completion of applicable MSHA training.
