The Ashburn Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department (AVFRD) is dedicated to safeguarding the lives and property of Ashburn and Loudoun County's residents and visitors through superior fire, rescue, emergency, and medical response services. We're on the lookout for a dedicated Fleet Mechanic to join our dynamic team. This role is critical in maintaining and repairing our volunteer-owned emergency apparatus, emphasizing the importance of experience with diesel engines (e.g., Cummins), heavy truck mechanics, roadside diagnosis, and vehicle electrical system troubleshooting. Role Overview

The Fleet Mechanic is instrumental in the acquisition, upkeep, and repair of a diverse range of vehicles and equipment, ensuring operational readiness and safety. Our fleet includes engines, ambulances, ladder trucks, SUVs, pickups, among other vital support equipment. The role demands not just technical expertise in diagnosing and fixing mechanical and electrical issues but also creativity in parts fabrication and a proactive stance on fleet management. You will work from our on-site, 3-bay maintenance shop. Candidates are expected to have, or be capable of obtaining, ASE or Manufacturer's Certification, State Inspector's License, and Emergency Vehicle Operations Certifications I-IV. Comprehensive background checks are a prerequisite for all prospective hires. 


Key Responsibilities

  • Spearheading the Apparatus Committee, offering crucial insights into the specification of EMS and Fire equipment.
  • Conducting thorough diagnostics, repairs, and maintenance of air compressors, hydraulic systems, and specialized firefighting and rescue equipment.
  • Operating and maintaining a variety of shop equipment and tools with precision, ensuring all maintenance and repairs meet high standards.
  • Efficient requisition and inventory management of parts and materials, aligning with equipment repair schedules.
  • Upholding rigorous safety inspection standards to ensure fleet reliability and safety.


Qualifications & Experience

  • A high school diploma or GED, accompanied by 2-3 years' experience in automotive, light, or heavy equipment repair, forms the educational foundation for this role.
  • A valid driver's license with a clean record is mandatory. Preference will be given to candidates with Master and EVT certifications, EVOC I-IV within 90 days, and those holding or capable of obtaining a Commercial Driver's License.
  • The ability to navigate and utilize computer systems effectively is essential, alongside proficient English literacy.

  • An extensive understanding of automotive machinery repair and maintenance, with specialized knowledge of the tools, gauges, and equipment unique to vehicle repair.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and integrate within a volunteer-based team, promoting a collaborative and productive environment.
  • Strong analytical skills to identify issues and implement timely, effective solutions, minimizing vehicle downtime and ensuring operational efficiency.
  • Commitment to rigorous safety standards, with the flexibility to adapt to dynamic work conditions and emergency call-outs.
  • The physical capabilities to manage demanding tasks including lifting, bending, and working in confined spaces, in various environmental conditions.


Career Development

  • Level I Fleet Mechanic: Foundation level, requiring ASE T-4, T-5, EVT F-1, F-2 certifications, focusing on brake systems, suspension, and basic fire apparatus maintenance.
  • Level II Fleet Mechanic: Intermediate level, with ASE T-2, T-3, T-6, EVT F-3, F-4 certifications, advancing to diesel engines, drive trains, and electrical systems expertise.
  • Level III Fleet Mechanic: Advanced level, demanding a comprehensive skill set evidenced by ASE T-1, T-7, EVT F-5, F-6 certifications, covering gasoline engines, heating/air conditioning, aerial apparatus, and automatic transmissions mastery.


Additional Requirements

Applicants must pass stringent background checks and demonstrate a high degree of professionalism and efficiency throughout a 90-day probationary period.
