WHAT YOU BRING
- J.D. and an active member in good standing with the California State Bar
- Two (2) years of experience in family law preferred
- Proven record of representing low-income clients strongly preferred
- Experience in domestic violence advocacy demonstrating a sincere commitment to working on behalf of domestic violence survivors
- Availability to work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends
- Bilingual ability in at least one Asian language (Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Tagalog, Thai, Vietnamese, Khmer, Samoan, Tongan or others) strongly preferred
- Prior experience handling independent projects or assignments, with legal services preferred
- Access to reliable means of transportation
Qualifications
ABOUT THE ROLE
Under the direction of the Program Director, the Staff Attorney is responsible for coordinating and providing family law legal assistance, with a focus on serving domestic violence survivors. The SAFE Project focuses on assisting domestic violence survivors with family law matters, as well the indigent and limited-English proficient immigrant community.
Your day-to-day responsibilities:
70% Client Support
- Handle a variety of family law and immigration cases, including domestic violence restraining orders, dissolution of marriage cases, parentage cases, child custody and child support hearings, and other related family law and immigration matters including VAWA petition, U-Visa, and T-Visa
- Provide direct legal services to low-income clients in a variety of immigration and family law cases, including domestic violence restraining orders, dissolution, paternity, child custody/visitation, child support, spousal support, VAWA petition, U-Visa, T-Visa, and other related family law matters
- Provide direct legal services to low-income clients in a variety of family law cases, including domestic violence restraining orders, dissolution, paternity, child custody/visitation, child support, spousal support, and other related family law matters
- Counsel and advise clients on their legal rights, prepare court forms and documents, draft declarations, and conduct legal research and writing including memorandum of points and authorities
- Provide court representation
20% Community Education
- Recruit, train, and mentor pro bono attorneys, law students, and other volunteers
- Coordinate client services with legal interns, legal assistant/advocate, pro bono attorneys and partner social service agencies
- Coordinate and conduct education and outreach presentations at community forums and trainings
- Develop and revise unit material including training manual and client brochures
- Conduct community legal clinics
10% Other Duties as Assigned
- Participate in the development and implementation of annual practice work plan
- Work with Program Director to meet funding and reporting requirements.
- Attend trainings on substantive legal areas
