The Atlanta Humane Society is seeking a driven and compassionate individual to join our affordable and sustainable veterinary hospital, Remedy, as a Veterinary Assistant. In addition to full-time employment and on the job training, the Veterinary Assistant will be enrolled in a four-year online program to receive a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) associate degree. The Veterinary Assistant supports our doctors by performing a variety of animal health care duties while providing quality animal and people care in accordance with the AHS mission, goals, and management philosophy. We are seeking a community-focused individual with effective communication abilities in addition to strong technical skills.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Assist in restraining animals, performing physical exams, giving vaccinations, and taking blood
- Enter appropriate medical and communication notes in practice management software
- Sterilize surgical instruments
- Filling prescriptions
- Performing laboratory tests and diagnostic imaging (radiographs and ultrasound)
- Remain alert and aware of animal behavior and physical condition
- Maintain safe and sanitary areas for animals
- Handle animals in a humane manner according to established safety policies and procedures
- Educate pet owners on proper animal health care
- Assist with surgical procedures (pre-medicate, sterilize instruments, prepare surgical suite, drug calculations, scrub, monitor anesthesia, recover animals)
- Report concerns and seek assistance from management for situations that require immediate problem-solving
- Interact with other departments as needed to accomplish hospital tasks
- Provide compassionate and patient care to both pets and people
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Minimum of one year experience in a similar capacity in an animal shelter, veterinary hospital or clinic preferred
- Computer literate in a Windows environment
- Ability to utilize effective problem solving/decision making skills
- Ability to communicate effectively
- Desire to work with animals and people
- General knowledge of animal welfare preferred
- Requires humane handling of animals and safe handling of cleaning supplies, chemicals, and equipment in compliance of safety rules and according to SDS rules
- Ability to lift, pull or push up to 50 lbs. with reasonable accommodations
