The Atlantic Council seeks a talented, dynamic, and entrepreneurial individual for a full-time Program Assistant position to serve in its Global Energy Center.

Reporting to the Center’s Deputy Director for European Energy Security, the Program Assistant’s main responsibility will be to support the Center’s work on transatlantic climate and energy security work, including research, writing, administrative, and logistical assistance, in close coordination with Center leadership. Additionally, the Program Assistant will provide staff support for the Center’s Founding Chairman including scheduling, preparing briefings, organizing travel, and miscellaneous administrative assistance. Furthermore, the Program Assistant will support and help coordinate the Center’s regular events and ambitious programming agenda. This position will also have opportunities to advance the development of new bodies of work and independently-led research and projects to enhance the Global Energy Center’s thought leadership on energy issues in the US and abroad.

The successful candidate will have an entrepreneurial spirit, superb communication skills, and enjoy the complexity of helping to build a rapidly growing program. The candidate should have a background in energy and environmental studies, political science, international relations, economics, history, European studies, or a related field. Interest and/or experience in Europe and European energy markets and geopolitics will also be given special consideration. The position requires excellent administrative and communication skills, superior writing ability, extraordinary attention to detail, and a proven aptitude to make sound judgments, think on one’s feet, assume responsibility, and work independently in a fast-paced Center with tight deadlines and competing priorities.

The successful candidate for this position will be committed to the Atlantic Council’s core mission to renew the Atlantic community for global challenges and Global Energy Center’s commitment to help the United States and its partners take the lead in navigating the challenges of the changing global energy landscape.

This position is based in our Washington, DC, headquarters, requiring a minimum of 4 days per week in office. The Atlantic Council offers a competitive compensation package commensurate with experience, education, and organizational equity, with offers from $53,000 to $59,000. Applications submitted by August 15, 2025, will be prioritized for consideration.

Job Responsibilities

Support and coordinate the Global Energy Center’s work on Transatlantic Climate and Energy Security

  • Organize public and private events, including (but not limited to) drafting agendas and speaker invitations; tracking responses; managing key outreach lists; helping to prepare briefing material for guests; and coordinating with other Atlantic Council programs as-relevant;
  • Support coordination and execution of the Central and Eastern European Energy Security Conference;
  • Coordinating travel and logistical arrangements for international engagements;
  • Research and writing related to reports and other short-form publications on advancing energy security and decarbonization through cooperation between the United States and transatlantic partners;
  • Cultivating, maintaining, and developing a wide network of crucial stakeholder and donor relationships related to the GEC’s transatlantic climate and energy security programming in coordination with Center leadership.

Provide Staff Support to the Global Energy Center’s Founding Chairman

  • Coordinate the Founding Chairman’s schedule and travel arrangements (as needed), in addition to miscellaneous administrative support;
  • Prepare briefing materials and talking points for event and media engagements;
  • Provide research and writing support.

Support the Global Energy Center’s Wider Research and Program Agenda

  • Support and coordinate the organization and execution of other Global Energy Center events and programming, including its annual Global Energy Forum;
  • Work with Center leadership to develop new bodies of work and projects, in line with the Center’s mission;
  • Conduct research as needed to support Center projects and activities, including briefings on current events, key stakeholders, and emerging issues;
  • Lead independent writing and research initiatives to support the Center’s thought leadership on key energy policy and sustainability issues.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher, in energy and environmental studies, political science, international relations, economics, history, European studies, or other relevant fields. Master’s degree preferred. Particular attention will be given to candidates with an EU policy background.
  • Superb organizational skills, attention to detail, and demonstrated initiative.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including an ability to work well in a team and to communicate effectively with others ranging from interns to government and business leaders in the United States and abroad.
  • Interest in geopolitics, energy policy, energy security, and climate policy.
  • Experience in organizing and staging events is highly desired.
  • Superior English language writing skills and analytical ability. Particular attention will be given to candidates with foreign language skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and web-editing are highly desired.
