What are the responsibilities and job description for the Development Officer position at Avenidas?

The Development Officer will play a crucial role in supporting Avenidas’ mission by securing financial resources and fostering relationships with donors, sponsors, and community partners. In collaboration with VP, Development, this position will focus on fundraising, donor relations, grant management & writing, and event planning to ensure the organization's financial sustainability and growth. The Development Officer is expected to exercise considerable program oversight, generally independent judgement and reasonable discretion while discharging duties. This position is responsible for ensuring that costs remain within budget and maintaining an ongoing understanding of agency financial matters. Duties may require evening and weekend hours occasionally.

Fundraising

Essential Job Functions

  • Develop and execute fundraising strategies to meet annual revenue goals.
  • Identify and cultivate new funding sources, including individual donors, corporate supporters, and foundations.
  • Lead, design and execute annual campaign appeals.
  • Manage and grow a portfolio of major gift prospects, conducting research, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship activities.

Donor Relations

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with a portfolio of existing donors, through regular communication and engagement.
  • Create and execute donor recognition and appreciation programs.
  • Work with Development Associate to ensure accurate donor contribution and interaction tracking
  • Engage and support Leadership Team in donor stewardship
  • Support VP, Dev in activities related to the Planned Giving program

Grant Writing

  • Research and identify grant opportunities that align with Avenidas' mission and programs.
  • Support VP, Development in preparing, writing, and submitting grant proposals and reports in a timely manner.
  • Co-create and manage an organization-wide grants management tracker and dashboard
  • Collaborate with VP, Programs and/or other program leaders for program related grants.

Event Planning

  • Manage the execution of Avenidas’ signature event, Lifetimes of Achievement, with the support of VP, Dev, Marketing & Communications team, Events Manager, volunteers including board members.
  • Assess the need for, and manage additional fundraising/cultivation events
  • Coordinate logistics, secure sponsorships, and manage event budgets.
  • Collaborate with marketing and communications teams to promote events and ensure successful outcomes.

Community Engagement

  • Represent Avenidas at community events, networking functions, and meetings as needed
  • Build partnerships with local businesses, organizations, and government entities
  • Serve as an ambassador for Avenidas, promoting its mission and programs to the broader community.

Secondary Job Functions

  • Participate in ongoing Agency programs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in nonprofit management, communications, business, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in nonprofit fundraising, planned giving, and event management.
  • Proven track record of successful fundraising and donor management.
  • Strong grant management, writing and proposal development skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Proficiency in fundraising software and donor management systems – Raisers Edge strongly preferred
  • Passion for Avenidas' mission and commitment to serving older adults.

Driver’s License: CA driver’s license with auto insurance and clean driving record.

Physical Demands

Frequent stand/walk, sit, use a computer; use a telephone, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.

Occasionally reach/work above shoulders, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp forcefully, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds, write by hand, sort/file paperwork.

Hours And Compensation

This is a full-time, on-site exempt (M-F) 40 hour per week position. Pay range is $97,654 to $99,000 annualized and benefits are generous. We offer medical, dental, vision, 403B grant (3% at 6 months), paid vacation, sick leave, holidays and more.
