Description

CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANT

Position Overview

The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) position is responsible for caring for residents, families, co-workers, visitors and all others.  The primary purpose of the job is to provide each of the CNA’s assigned residents with routine daily nursing care and services in accordance with the resident’s assessment and care plan and as directed by the supervisors. The CNA is delegated the authority, responsibility and accountability needed for carrying out assigned duties and supervises no one. The CNA works under the direction of licensed personnel to provide quality resident care in accordance with applicable regulations.

Essential Functions include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist residents with activities of daily living, personal hygiene, and other individual needs, including help with bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting, dental care, colostomy care, prosthetic appliances, and other needs in accordance with the individual’s care plan requirements.
  • Assist residents in preparing for scheduled appointments and planned activities including physicians’ visits, religious services, shopping, or other outings.
  • Maintain a comfortable environment for the residents by noting and adjusting room temperature, ventilation, and lighting, and adjust to residents’ satisfaction. Position the nurse call system to be within easy reach of the resident.
  • Assist in dining, both in the dining room and the resident’s room as appropriate. Assist with tray set-up, assure that food is easily accessible, assistive devices are in place, and food is arranged for visually impaired residents. Personally feed residents where indicated. Remove trays or dishes in a timely manner and perform after-meal care as required.
  • Provide care that maintains each resident’s skin integrity to prevent pressure ulcers, skin tears, and other damage by changing incontinent residents, turning, and repositioning immobile residents, and applying moisturizers to fragile skin.
  • Make rounds with on-coming and off-going shifts and document care given each shift as required and remain knowledgeable of individual care plans.
  • Performs tasks assigned by a licensed nurse to such as vital signs, residents’ weights, collecting specimens, etc.
  • Observe residents for changes in condition or behavior and report these changes to the appropriate licensed nurse.
  • Transport residents to and from meals, therapy, church services and activities or for other purposes as required.
  • Understand and practice all aspects of residents’ rights including the maintenance of comfort, privacy, communication, and dignity in the delivery of services to them.

Resident Rights:

  • Maintain the confidentiality of all resident care information including protected health information. Report known or suspected incidents of unauthorized disclosure of such information.
  • Treat all residents fairly, and with kindness, dignity and respect.
  • Ensure that all nursing care is provided in privacy.
  • Knock before entering the resident’s room.


Secondary Responsibilities:
Every incidental duty connected with the CNA position cannot be specified in the job description.  The colleague, at the discretion of the Director of Nursing, may be required to perform duties that are not included in this job description.

Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the colleague must be able to frequently lift/carry up to 50 pounds independently and utilize proper techniques/tools/assistance to lift greater weights, including the human body.  Ability to turn, reposition and assist patients to transfer and ambulate.  Visual acuity including near/far vision, color discrimination and depth perception. Use of senses necessary for resident observation, communication, touch, hearing and smell.  Standing and walking for prolonged periods of time.  Frequently stoop, reach, push and pull during provision of resident care.  Fine motor skills to administer resident care services, treatments and procedures, grasp objects including medical supplies and the human body.  Use of hands to document resident care on electronic medical record or on paper charts. Must be able to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations.

 

Educational/Professional Qualifications:

  • High School diploma/equivalent required.
  • Must possess a current Florida license as a Certified Nurse’s Aide.
  • Experience in working as a CNA in a long-term senior living facility is preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Possess math skills sufficient to do basic calculations regarding weight, volume and distance.
  • Able to relate to and work with the ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and at times, hostile people.
  • Supportive team member, contribute to and be an example of teamwork and team concept.
  • Able to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
  • Able to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public. Must possess the ability and willingness to work harmoniously with other personnel.
