Back to Independence works with special populations of clients- People with Neurological Diagnoses such as Spinal Cord Injury, Brain Injury, Parkinson’s and Stroke. We address each client’s needs for exercise both in the gym and pool setting.
We provide comprehensive specialized training to our staff and continuing education to further their skills for training our unique clients and their needs.
Exercise Specialist Job description
The Exercise Specialist assesses the physical fitness of the clients, determines current strength and endurance, devises individualized exercise programs tailored to meet the needs of specific goals and facilitate rehabilitation. This hands-on role allows for an interactive and engaging work environment. Our team members are part of an environment that fosters teamwork, team member engagement and community involvement. Job Functions:
-Reports and records the client's progress and exercise effectiveness to the team.
-Instructs and conducts exercise sessions, classes, and collaborative staff exercise training.
-Works within the guidelines established by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).
-Assists the Physical and Occupational Therapists with routine client care (adolescents, adults and geriatrics) treatment plans.
-Assists other client care team members in lifts, transports, equipment assemble, activities of daily living, transfers, wheelchair mobility and weight shifts; locomotor training;
-Maintains gym and therapy equipment, the gym, storage areas, wheelchairs and bathroom equipment, and other areas as assigned.
-Maintains all equipment in safe working conditions and reports broken or faulty equipment to supervisor.
-Attends facility special events.
-Instructs new employees and volunteers in departmental maintenance tasks.
-Abilities to perform decisively in critical situations and to incorporate many types of data.
-Has the knowledge, skills and ability to interpret information to identify each clients’ requirements for care relative to his/her age specific needs.
-Has the ability to supervise exercise, monitor clients during exercise, and modify exercise prescriptions for neurologically impaired clients, in conjunction with physician precautions/recommendations as needed.
-Has effective communication and interpersonal skills to relate to clients, families, caregivers, and other staff.
-Ability to successfully complete competency testing.
Required Qualifications
- Preferred 1-year of experience teaching group fitness or personal training
- CPR/AED certification
- Bachelor's degree in an exercise related field (preferred)
- Current fitness certification from an approved education company such as ACSM, ACE, NASM, NSCA, and/or AFAA
- Knowledge of physiology, exercise technique, and body mechanics
- Can multi-task and stay organized
- Practice positive, motivating, and effective interpersonal communication skills
- Demonstrate the desire and capacity to train all fitness levels
- Can safely lift and move up to 50lbs
