Milwaukee-based Bars & Recreation (BAR) owns and operates a family of entertainment brands: AXE MKE, NorthSouth Club, Nine Below, Splash Studio, Head Space Trivia, Team MKE, Amped, Game Show MKE and The New Fashioned.

  • AXE MKE offers a controlled environment in which customers can participate in competitive axe throwing.
  • NorthSouth Club is the only full-size deck shuffleboard facility in Wisconsin, paired with 16 axe throwing lanes.
  • Nine Below offers an innovative team-based twist on indoor miniature golf.
  • Splash Studio offers canvas and wood painting projects that can be created from home.
  • Head Space Trivia is an online virtual trivia platform paired with a live host.
  • Amped offers private suite karaoke and event space for creative meetings and events.
  • Game Show MKE offers a 90-minute live experience featuring games and challenges including The Feud, 20 Second Challenge, Pop Goes the Lyric, and more.
  • The New Fashioned offers hyperbowling, street curling, and dartball.



Customers come to us seeking unique, fun, organized opportunities to celebrate life events or just spend time socializing with friends and co-workers. They can make online reservations and book custom events via our proprietary booking system or with assistance from our in-house sales team. Target demographics vary slightly across the brands, but primarily include young professionals between the ages of 25-45. Each brand has its own unique voice and aesthetic; however, all employees and resources are centralized through Bars & Rec.

Job Description

Crew Members are the primary hosts for each Bars & Recreation brand’s activity-based experience(s). They are expected to facilitate a fun, safe, memorable experience for each guest. Crew Members may be shifted to work at any facility and must be able to adapt their host style and skills accordingly. Crew Members are also expected to take orders, bartend, prep basic snack foods, and serve food and drinks to guests.

Activity Host Tasks

  • Warmly greet customers and welcome them to their activities
  • Make personal connections with guests (i.e. learn about if they are celebrating a special event, if they are repeat customers, what they would like to get out of their experience, etc.)
  • Adapt customer service style quickly and appropriately as needed
  • Take food/drink orders upon guest arrival and periodically throughout their experience
  • Run food/drink orders to/from bar
  • Maintain knowledge of all cocktail recipes and beer, wine, and spirit offerings
  • Verify identification and age requirements of customers if needed for alcohol service
  • Collect payment/create tabs on a POS system
  • Deliver activity-specific equipment in a timely manner
  • Train customers in their specific activities, which may include axe throwing, deck shuffleboard, and/or mini golf
  • Teach customers how to safely use their specific activity equipment
  • Monitor safety and provide guidance for children who are participating in activities during specific business hours
  • Market and promote special offerings, add-ons, and upsell opportunities to customers
  • Set up/deliver special orders or add-on orders
  • Perform regular table touches to ensure a continued positive experience
  • Take customer photos at the end of their experience
  • Clearly explain and enforce house and safety rules to customers
  • Report customer issues up the chain of command immediately so that they can be resolved before a customer leaves the building
  • Keep track of time for each reservation
  • Clear and reset lanes/courts/courses/tables as needed
  • Change axe targets, which requires carrying wood and using power tools
  • Paint boards and maintain equipment
  • Clean and maintain the facility on a regular basis including sweeping, mopping, dusting, sanitizing, etc.
  • Demonstrate exemplary employee behavior
  • Any other duties as assigned

Additional Tasks When Bartending

  • Warmly greet customers and welcome them to the bar
  • Maintain a clean, organized, safe, fully stocked bar
  • Maintain knowledge of all cocktail recipes and beer, wine, and spirit offerings
  • Mix traditional and creative cocktails
  • Pour accurately and serve drinks quickly
  • Verify identification and age requirements of customers if needed for alcohol service
  • Collect payment/create tabs on a POS system
  • Build a rapport with customers to create a positive atmosphere
  • Make suggestions based on customer tastes and preferences
  • Follow all recommendations and requirements of the Responsible Beverage Server Course
  • Perform regular bussing tasks such as stocking, trash, recycling, dishes, etc.
  • Clean and maintain behind the bar area on a regular basis including sweeping, mopping, dusting, sanitizing, etc.
  • Demonstrate exemplary employee behavior
  • Any other duties as assigned

Job Location

Bars & Rec employees rotate around the various facilities to support the overall team as needed. Reliable transportation is required.

Supervisor

This job reports to the Director of Experiences (DOE) and the Experience & Operations Managers (EOMs). If there is no EOM onsite, the position is supervised by the Crew Lead(s) and Senior Crew Lead(s).

Time Commitment

Crew Members are expected to work 15-29 hours per week. Open availability on Saturdays is required for scheduling purposes.

Compensation

Base rate plus share of Tip Pool. Gross rate range after tips = $18-$22/hr.

Application Requirements

  • Preference for candidates who are at least 21 years old. (Additional restrictions apply for employees under age 21.)
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED.
  • Must have some hospitality, food/beverage service, or retail experience. Preference will go to candidates who have similar activity host experience (i.e. emcee, hotel/resort/cruise/banquet host, camp counselor, trivia master, concierge, etc.) and/or who have experience bartending in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be able to carry up to 50 lbs., climb stairs, and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be able to work at least one Saturday shift per week (daytime or evening). Open availability on Saturdays is required for scheduling purposes. Additional weekday and Sunday availability is preferred.
  • Must be willing to complete an online Responsible Beverage Server Course and submit proof of completion.
  • Must be able to hold and speak clearly into a microphone in front of small and large groups.
  • Must be able to facilitate activities for children at allowed establishments during specific hours.
  • Must be able to operate a point-of-sale system and accurately conduct credit card transactions.
  • Must be able to be handle fast-paced shifts and be standing for 4-12 hours.
  • Must be able to hold an axe with one or both hands overhead.
  • Must be comfortable using power tools including drills, power saws, and a grinding wheel.
  • Must be comfortable carrying, using, and standing on a 6-foot ladder.
  • Must be able to read, understand, and follow the Bars & Recreation Employee Handbook.
