Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Animal Caretaker to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for providing high-quality care to a variety of animals, ensuring their health and well-being. The Animal Caretaker will also assist with front desk operations, interact with pet owners, and maintain a clean and safe environment for all animals.
Duties
- Provide daily care for animals, including feeding, grooming, and exercise.
- Administer medications and treatments as prescribed by veterinarians.
- Assist in animal catheterization and restraint during examinations or procedures.
- Maintain accurate records of animal health, behavior, and treatment plans.
- Interact with pet owners at the front desk, addressing inquiries and providing information about services.
- Ensure cleanliness of animal enclosures and common areas to promote a healthy environment.
- Monitor animal behavior for signs of illness or distress and report findings to veterinary staff.
- Support veterinary technicians and assistants in various tasks as needed.
Skills
- Strong knowledge of animal physiology and veterinary terminology.
- Experience in medication administration and understanding of treatment protocols.
- Familiarity with animal restraint techniques to ensure safety during handling.
- Excellent communication skills for effective interaction with pet owners and team members.
- The basic methods and procedures of cage/kennel cleaning.

Qualifications/Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- One year of related experience ideal
- Valid driver's license.
Time commitments/Expectations
- 40 Hour work week
- Some evening and weekend shifts may be required
- Work is subject to working on weekends and holidays.
- Employee may have to work outside in a variety of weather conditions.
Qualifications/Requirements
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communications skills.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Minimum of one year working in an animal shelter; preferably in a behavior position.
- Must have a clean driver’s license and reliable transportation

Working Conditions
Work is performed constantly in an animal shelter that operates seven days per week with exposure to animals, including some with questionable health and temperament concerns, high noise levels, zoonotic diseases, and cleaning agents. The person in this position needs to regularly move about the shelter to provide care to shelter and clients’ animals. Regularly operates a computer and other office equipment (i.e. calculator, copier, and printer). Occasionally positions self to handle animals of all sizes in a variety of areas and positions (low cages, high cages, on tables, on the floor, in vehicles, etc.). Communicate with clients, staff members and volunteers who have inquiries and must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations. Occasionally moves animals weighing up to 50 pounds (i.e. through the shelter on leash or using other safe restraint and animal handling equipment, into and out of cages in the shelter, onto and off exam tables).
- Previous experience as a veterinary technician or assistant is preferred but not mandatory.
