What are the responsibilities and job description for the HVAC Mechanic position at Baton Rouge General Medical Center - Mid City?

JOB PURPOSE OR MISSION: Participates in the operation, maintenance and repair of the physical plant and equipment in and around all applicable General Health System facilities.

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

• Employee proactively reports errors, potential errors, injuries or potential injuries.
• Employee demonstrates departmental specific patient and employee safety standards at all times.
• Employee demonstrates the use of proper safety techniques, equipment and devices and follows safety policies, procedures and plans.

JOB FUNCTIONS

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS include, but are not limited to: 1. Performs repairs and preventative maintenance on all assigned equipment.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:

• Uses proper tools and exhibits good workmanship on all jobs.
• Utilizes all safety equipment and procedures, according to established industry and GHS standards.
• Completes assigned work orders received by computer for equipment within applicable facilities, as well as equipment brought to Facilities Management.
• Performs repairs and preventative maintenance within established timeframes, with efficient usage of time and materials.
• Performs more complex duties as assigned by supervisor, within scope of individual ability and knowledge.

2. Monitors operation of mechanical, electrical, HVAC, hot water, medical gas and other systems.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

• Completes daily checklist, accurately recording pressure, temperature, amps, etc. on all assigned equipment.
• Notifies supervisor of any readings outside of accepted ranges

3. Follows GHS safety protocols for all tasks.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

• Demonstrates a complete understanding and adherence to GHS fire, safety, environmental and infection control policies and procedures.
• Practices all safety precautions and utilizes safety equipment (i.e. safety glasses, proper attire, etc.) within department and industry guidelines.

4. Performs all other duties as required.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

• Attends in-services and other meetings as required.

5. Performs repairs, preventative maintenance and installations on all assigned equipment. PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

• Consults with HVAC Foreman to evaluate work orders and set priorities.
• Installs assigned equipment within manufacturers’ specifications.
• Analyzes blueprints and specifications for installations; calculates the quantity of pipes, valves, controls, Freon, etc. needed for job.

6. Monitors operation of mechanical, electrical, HVAC, hot water, medical gas and other systems.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

• Regulates controls to obtain the most efficient and effective operation.
• Determines whether readings are within normal ranges, and responds appropriately to readings outside of normal ranges, within established GHS/departmental policies and procedures. Adjusts controls as needed to maintain proper operational conditions. Reports abnormal conditions to supervisor. SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Two years experience in hospital or building maintenance OR three years experience in an industrial craft. Three years experience at a journeyman level in HVAC preferred.

SPECIFIC EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS Trade or vocational school graduate OR equivalent experience.

SPECIAL SKILL, LICENSE AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS Demonstrated working knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems, tools and materials. Able to understand and carry out instructions. Dependable and motivated to complete duties without constant supervision. Able to interact appropriately with a diverse population of customers. Demonstrated thorough knowledge of HVAC systems, tools and materials. Able to work independently.  EPA-Universal Certification.

HIPAA REQUIREMENTS: Maintains knowledge of and adherence to all applicable HIPAA regulations appropriate to Job Position including but not limited to: patient demographics, patient related complaints, and information related to patient location.

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS: Maintains knowledge of and adherence to all applicable safety practices appropriate to Job Position including but not limited to: Incident reporting, handling of wastes, sharps and linen, PPE, exposure control plans, hand washing, environment of care, monitors clinical alarms for all ages and interfaces with all age groups and complies with related competencies
