What are the responsibilities and job description for the Highway Maintenance Worker II or III position at Beltrami County?

Beltrami County is creating an eligibility list for a Highway Maintenance Worker II or Maintenance Worker III position. The current opening is a full-time benefited position assigned to work at the Bemidji Shop.  Responsibilities include heavy equipment operation, heavy truck driving, snow plowing and related road work.

Performs intermediate skilled trades work repairing and maintaining streets, culverts, shoulders, and related facilities, operating heavy equipment, performing snow removal and ice control activities, sweeping and patching streets, performing a variety of maintenance and repair tasks, and related work as apparent or assigned.  Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Highway Maintenance Supervisor.  Education and Experience
Minimum requirements are:

Maintenance Worker II:  Salary Range $20.62-$27.00
  • High School Diploma or GED, and
  • One year of post-secondary education in heavy equipment operation, and
  • Four years of related experience, and
  • Possession of a valid Class A CDL or Class B CSL with the ability to obtain a Class A CDL within 6 months of hire.
  • (Two additional years of heavy equipment experience may be substituted for the formal training.)
 Maintenance Worker III:  Salary Range $23.20-$30.28
  • High School Diploma or GED, and
  • One year of post-secondary education in heavy equipment operation, and
  • Six years of related experience, and
  • Possession of a valid Class A CDL.  
  • (Two additional years of heavy equipment experience may be substituted for the formal training.)  
 Job offer contingent upon successfully passing drug screening, physical, and background check.Qualification Requirements

Essential Functions
Maintains and repairs roads, culverts, and right-of-ways; seals cracks, patches roads, cleans, repairs, and replaces culverts; clears right-of-ways of brush; repairs shoulders, bridges, and guardrails.
Clears snow with snow plow; salts and sands roads.
Drives truck to haul road construction and repair material, such as gravel, rock, dirt, black top, and asphalt.
Operates road construction equipment such as grader, dozer, mower, backhoe, bobcat, front-end loader, wood loader, roller packer, telehandler, street sweeper, boom mower, water truck, and lowboy.
Inspects vehicle and grounds maintenance equipment; maintains and repairs as needed.
Updates and maintains timesheets, equipment inspection reports, inventories, and explosive reports.
Assists with engineering operations as necessary.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of machinery and equipment used in performance of duties assigned; thorough knowledge of occupational hazards and safety procedures of the work; thorough knowledge of county road names and geography; ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

Physical Requirements
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and repetitive motions, frequently requires walking, sitting and speaking or hearing and occasionally requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, tasting or smelling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm's length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires exposure to vibration and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock, poisonous plants and insects; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).Special Requirements
May require Explosives Permit and Trapping License within six months of hire.
Safety, CPR, First Aid, and OSHA training within six months of hire.
Valid Commercial Driver's License with Class A endorsement.
