JOB SUMMARY:

The Director of Finance is responsible for directing all financial functions of the Club including the day-to-day accounting and cash management, monthly reporting and analysis, forecasts, annual operating and capital budgets. The Director of Finance will also provide leadership and direction for the Club and will work closely with the General Manager/COO (GM/COO), Board of Directors, and Finance Committee to establish long-range strategies, goals, and plans. The Director of Finance is responsible for driving financial results. 


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage the operations of the accounting department, including accounts payable, member accounts receivable/collections, and payroll. Supervises the preparation or prepares all applicable federal, state, and local tax returns and required government reports.
  • Management and development of subordinates; selects, trains, supervises and evaluates accounting staff. Continually review the accounting department staff and structure for opportunities to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the team. Provide accounting staff with professional and personal growth. 
  • Provide direction and oversight of the Club’s collection efforts and participate in the development of legal strategies and other actions to aggressively pursue delinquent accounts. Advise GM/COO and Finance Committee when new delinquent accounts or unique situations arise. 
  • Manage cash flow and provide timely communication regarding future cash projections and borrowing needs. Initiate appropriate strategies to enhance cash position and manage all banking relationships.
  • Manage the Club’s investment activity and coordinate with the Finance Committee on investment policies and procedures. 
  • Timely and accurate preparation and distribution of all standard monthly financial reports (balance sheet, income statement, cash flows, capital expenditures, delinquent accounts) and key performance indicators. 
  • Provide timely and accurate analysis of financial results and trends to assist management and the Board of Directors in performing their responsibilities. Monitor budgeted versus actual performance, advise management about variances and their causes and work with department heads to develop and implement corrective actions to ensure those budget goals are met. Prepare special analysis to help identify trends or potential issues.
  • Lead and direct the monthly forecast and annual budget process including coordination with the various committees and all departments. Drive continual improvement of the forecast and budget process through education of department managers on financial issues impacting their budgets.
  • Leads all Finance Committee meetings.
  • Presents financial reports at Board meetings as well as Town Hall and Annual meetings. 
  • Participate in key decisions as a member of the senior management team. Maintain in-depth relations with all department heads and advise and coach about the financial aspects of their responsibilities.
  • Participate and assist in the evaluation and formulation of the Club’s future direction and development of supporting plans and tactical initiatives. Develop financial strategies and performance measures that support the Club’s strategic direction.
  • Responsible for the Club’s internal control systems to assure that records are accurately maintained and that established policies and practices are satisfactorily and consistently followed. Conducts internal auditing programs, as necessary, to ensure that internal control systems are operating as intended. Coordinates with the Club’s external auditors. 
  • Develop, implement, and enforce policies and procedures to help manage and control the overall operation and effectiveness of the Club.
  • Ensure that the Club maintains proper and adequate insurance coverage and that all insurance records are properly maintained.
  • Negotiates and maintains contracts for the maintenance of computers and office equipment. Provides financial perspective and advises on all other contracts into which the Club may enter.

EXPERIENCE, COMPETENCIES, AND EDUCATION:

An experienced leader and financial executive with appropriate industry experience. An energetic, forward-thinking, and creative individual with high ethical standards. A strategic visionary with sound technical skills, analytical ability, good judgment, and a strong operational focus. A well-organized and self-directed individual who is “politically savvy” and a team player. An intelligent and articulate individual who can relate to people at all levels of an organization and possesses excellent communication skills. A decisive individual who possesses a “big picture” perspective and is well-versed in systems.

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in accounting or business administration and a minimum of ten years of progressively responsible financial experience with a minimum of three to five years in a controller or equivalent role.

OTHER SKILLS:

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents.  
  • Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. 
  • Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to the Board of Directors.
