What are the responsibilities and job description for the Operations Supervisor I position at Berkshire Transit Management?
A Transit Operations Supervisor I’s primary responsibility is to provide for the safe and efficient operation of the Berkshire Regional Transit Authority fixed route public bus service. Transit Operations Supervisor I acts as a “front-line” customer service representative of the Company and as a direct supervisor to all Bus Operators. Operations Supervisor I uses sound judgment, interpersonal communication skills, and workplace knowledge to assist customers with information, assure passenger or employee safety, resolve problems, while ensuring employees perform their duties as required. Additionally, Transit Operations Supervisor I aids the transit system by operating computer-based radio, or digital, communication and tracking systems.
This position is subject to drug and alcohol testing, including random testing, under Federal Transit Administration (FTA) drug and alcohol regulations.
Essential Functions
· Schedule bus operators to driving shifts to maintain staff coverage as required.
· Accurately maintain system documentation, such as operator payroll information, work attendance, and employee performance evaluations.
· Document, investigate, and resolve passenger complaints or concerns.
· Document and investigate collisions involving transit vehicles; prepare the proper reports.
· Evaluate and document the performance of subordinate personnel.
· Count fare revenue and prepare the necessary documentation.
· Regularly participate in rotating supervision at the ITC.
· Operate a CDL vehicle as required, as requested, or in an emergency situation.
· Relieve and/or otherwise assist drivers, as needed.
· Explain difficult or complex tasks to employees in a training capacity, as required.
Non-Essential Functions
· Attend regular trainings as scheduled by the department supervisor and/or Assistant General Manager.
· Complete other duties as assigned by the Assistant General Manager, or General Manager, when required.
Position Requirements
Applicants must:
· Be able to work a variety of shift times depending on transit service schedules including days, nights, or weekends.
· Possess a high school diploma, or graduate equivalency degree (GED).
· Demonstrate working knowledge of modern office computer systems, such as the Microsoft Office Suite
· Have reliable transportation both to and from work.
· Have knowledge of, and adhere to, all traffic rules and regulations.
· Possess or be able to obtain a commercial driver’s license of the type required to operate a transit vehicle.
· Be eligible to be insured under Berkshire Transit Management, Inc.’s vehicle liability insurance policy for duration of employment.
· Pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test.
· Pass a pre-employment DOT physical.
· Demonstrate proficient knowledge of basic math, map reading, and time telling.
· Demonstrate the ability to multitask either by working with others or solo.
· Communicate verbally to the extent of interacting with passengers and employees.
· Complete accurate, legible, and factual written reports.
· Possess or be able to obtain a valid Bus Operators License issued by the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities (DPU).
Licensing
This position requires a CDL Class B with Air Brakes and Passenger endorsements. Applicants are not required to apply with a CDL or CDL permit. BTM provides paid CDL training for unlicensed drivers, supervisors, and managers.
Qualified applicants must be eligible to be insured under Berkshire Transit Management, Inc.’s vehicle liability insurance policy for duration of employment.
Medical Requirements
This position must meet the medical qualifications for commercial driver’s licensing and are required to obtain and maintain a valid DOT Medical Card as a condition of future and continued employment. This medical exam is provided by a physician registered with the USDOT (Department of Transportation) at no cost to the applicant, after an offer for employment has been offered and accepted. BTM does not accept Medical Cards obtained while employed elsewhere. Therefore, all newly hired employees in this position must pass a DOT physical as part of the employment process requirements.

This job position is not unionized; however, this position does supervise unionized employees.
Hours of Work, Scheduling and Rate of Pay
This position is full-time hourly employment. Full-time supervisors, managers, and department directors work at least 40 hours per week. Work shifts may include mornings, evenings, weekdays, and weekends as needed. Pay is disbursed weekly.
