The Health Promoter is primarily responsible for meeting the health needs of Afghans arriving through the Afghan Placement & Assistance program. This individual will be responsible for providing health education to Afghan clients to best prepare them to navigate the U.S. healthcare system, as well as assisting clients in scheduling and attending visits to primary care physicians and other medical providers to ensure timely follow-up regarding ongoing medical care and treatment plans.

This position is expected to function effectively with regular supervision while following the guidelines given on procedures, along with agency, federal, and state regulatory requirements.

Essential Job Responsibilities

• Collaborate with resettlement agencies and State Refugee Health Coordinator to identify Afghan clients in need of health services;
• Provide medical case management by developing a plan of care and ensuring timely receipt of healthcare;
• Assist clients in scheduling medical appointments and follow-ups, as needed;
• Conduct a health orientation with each individual client to build their understanding of the different types of healthcare, how health insurance works, how to schedule medical appointments, etc.;
• Host monthly health workshops in collaboration with community partners that provide education on health issues that may commonly afflict this population;
• Identify health resources and services within the community that best serve the needs of Afghan clients;
• Protect all confidential information, company property and electronic data;
• Comply with safety rules;
• Complete other duties as assigned.
  
  

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in health sciences, social work, human services, or related field of study from an accredited university or Associates degree and equivalent level of experience;
• Minimum of three years of health care work experience;
• Flexible schedule to work after hours and weekends, as necessary;
• Bilingual in both English and Dari or Pasto, preferred;
• Must possess critical thinking skills and have the ability to prioritize multiple appointments throughout the workday and work week;
• Able to effectively build partnerships with resettlement agencies, medical care providers, and others;
• Must demonstrate knowledge of diverse cultural backgrounds, particularly refugee populations;
• Must be comfortable with public speaking and presenting;
• Computer skills sufficient to perform essential functions including knowledge of Microsoft Office suite;
• Must be 21 years old with a valid driver’s license with at least 3 years of driving experience in the U.S. to operate a vehicle on behalf of Bethany. Must also pass a Motor Vehicle Records (MVR) check and maintain a reliable vehicle with proof of adequate insurance coverage;
• Pass a criminal history screen, including state and local child protection agency registries;
• Subscription to and integration of the agency Statement of Faith, Mission Statement, and Commitment to Unity.
