Birdhouse Coffee, a specialty coffee roasting and manufacturing company, is seeking an experienced Coffee Roaster for our roasting facility South Windsor, CT location.
This highly caffeinated individual will play a key role in the mission of the company through the development of roast profiles, execution of high standards in roast consistency and exhibiting skill in flavor development. Familiarity with industry leading equipment such as Deidrich IR12 Roasters with Cropster and following Specialty Coffee protocols.
The Ideal candidate that we are looking for is someone that works hard, understands the fundamentals of coffee roasting and is constantly challenge themselves to reach new frontiers.
Essential Functions:
- Roasting – Assisting with daily roasting activities, ensure quality and consistency of roast profiles and maintain cleanliness of production area
- Sourcing – Sample roast and evaluate via SCA cupping standards and provide input to influence green purchasing decisions
- Quality Control – Monitor green coffee for stability and quality, maintain blend standards, attend weekly coffee meetings, lead production cuppings, document results and make necessary adjustments to ensure roast quality
- Maintenance – Conduct routine cleaning and scheduled maintenance of roasting and production equipment, establish a thorough working knowledge of all systems and occasionally assist with printing labels and packaging of roasted coffee.
- Leadership – Maintain high standards of professionalism and communication with production team and contribute constructively to companywide provide positive support to all team members
- Inventory – Organize and maintain green coffee inventory, maintain roast, organic and maintenance logs as well as blend percentages and shipping data
- Sales - Help ensure that baristas have knowledge of coffee that they are selling. Also help in outside sales of coffee distribution to grocery stores and restaurants.
Qualifications and Requirements The ability to speak, read and write English proficiently.
- Bachelor’s Degree or Strong learner
- 2 years’ experience with coffee roasting machinery including weighing batches of coffee beans in a scale hopper and feeding the beans into the roaster maintaining proper temperature by observing the roaster thermometer and adjusting controls properly
- Ability to create roast profiles and dedication to ongoing skill development
- Advanced sensory evaluation and cupping/SCA scoresheet skills – Q Grader a plus
- Good organizational skills, problem solving ability and intuitive resourcefulness
- Strong initiative, leadership skills, ability to self-manage while remaining open to constructive feedback and able to work in a small team environment
- Strong competencies with Cropster and MS Office applications including Excel and Word

- The ability to stand, walk, sit for long periods of time (at least 8 hours per day and 5 days per week)
- The use of hands to handle or feel and the ability to reach with hands and arm
- The ability to stoop, kneel, or crouch
- The ability to squat, bend, twist and reach for items below waist level or above shoulders
- The ability to lift, push/pull, carry and/or move up to 50 pounds
- The ability to climb ladders, stairs, ramps and uneven floor and/or surfaces as needed
