Description

SUMMARY

 

Responsibilities include assisting in development and implementing the plan for broad promotion of the Birmingham Zoo, Inc. (BZI) through public relations functions and social media outlets. Interacts with media as well as assisting managers with marketing initiatives and aiding other department managers as needed.

 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

  1. Content creator for all active social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and Twitter)
  2. Maintains active presence across all platforms by responding to questions and monitoring comments
  3. Creates social media campaigns and ideas to help promote the Zoo across all departments
  4. Creates weekly social media schedules in accordance with event promotions, fundraising campaigns, education programs and camps, Zoo conservation stories, animal announcements, organization updates and press releases.
  5. Maintains marketing and social media request form
  6. Serves as a marketing photographer and videographer – skilled experience in both areas
  7. Works closely with Conservation Manager, Animal departments, and Education to gather and curate content
  8. Gathers monthly social media analytics to create reports
  9. Maintains updated and organized social media library of photos and videos
  10. Works with Development Department, Events Department, Animal Departments and Education Department to secure dates and relevant information needed to plan and start promotion of events and programs for press releases social media and email campaigns.
  11. Works with M&PR Manager and Marketing & Design Coordinator on promotion planning, scheduling, and timelines for graphic design needs, press/media coverage, social media posts/content, and as assigned.
  12. Serves as media assistant during interviews and on press days (or as needed)
  13. Attends and posts actively during special events (opening night and for guest appearances)
  14. Other duties as assigned

SAFETY ANALYSIS

 

The Marketing & Social Media Coordinator position is impacted by hazardous exposures common to an office environment. 

 

Specific training and procedures will be provided, designed to maintain safety of people as the highest priority of the Zoo followed by the safety of the animal collection. 

 

The Marketing & Social Media Coordinator, as with any staff member of the Zoo, is required to be familiar with the Zoo’s overall safety policies as outlined in the staff handbook as well as being responsible for reporting any injury immediately to the Safety Manager, first aid department, and Manager on Duty (MOD).

 

The Marketing & Design Coordinator will need to be familiar with radio protocols and all animal safety protocols inherent to accommodating any special client requests.

  • Use of hands, fingers, tools or controls. 
  • Frequently required to stand; walk; sit; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, bend, crouch and talk or hear. 
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. 
  • Periods of frequent walking for long distances
  • Exposure to the elements including sun exposure and wet surfaces.
  • Depending on assignment, exposure to the elements can be expected.

 

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

 

Education and work experience

 

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Graphic Design or equivalent
  1. One to three years’ relevant experience, preferably with a nonprofit or media organization, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  1. Experience dealing with advertising agencies, print houses and the media preferred

 

Skills and knowledge

 

  1. Ability to work independently and achieve high productivity with little supervision
  2. Must have ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality as well as exercise extreme discretion.
  3. Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills; high energy and enthusiasm for completion of tasks; team building skills; and the ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

  2. Ability to think critically and demonstrated time-management skills.
  3. Ability to convey information clearly and concisely.
  4. Must have good presentation and public speaking skills.
  5. Strong organizational skills with strong attention to detail.

Other requirements

 

  1. Must be willing to travel locally.  Must have a current valid driver’s license with no prior traffic violations (within the last five years).

 

 

POSITION TYPE AND HOURS OF WORK

 

  1. Full time
  2. Mainly weekdays with some weekends required; occasional evening work and holidays.
