Veterinary Assistants assist Registered Veterinary Technicians and doctors to provide exceptional quality care and a clean, safe environment for patients. They have direct contact with doctors, patients, clients, and co-workers and work as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
Essential Functions
Veterinary Assistants work under the supervision of a Hospital Lead and report to a department supervisor. The primary responsibilities for a Veterinary Assistant include care of hospitalized patients, assisting Registered Veterinary Techniciand and doctors in care and treatment of animals, and maintaining BRVC facilities as clean and organized. This work includes, but is not limited to:
- Ensuring that appropriate preoperative blood panels are run and IV catheters are placed when appropriate in a timely manner on anesthetic patients. Perform these tasks if needed.
- Recording weight and body temperature on anesthetic patients in anticipation of the Doctor’s physical examination.
- Helping to ensure that the Doctor enters orders for IV fluids and drugs, and preparing and administering these drugs under the direction of their Registered Veterinary Technician or Doctor.
- Confirming surgery site/dental table schedules and rotations with Hospital Lead
- Setting up surgery/dental suites, tables, and mayo stands
- Assisting Registered Veterinary Technicians in induction and recovery of patients
- Entering departing instructions
- Calling owners with updates post procedure
- Making release appointments for patients
- Entering charges for patients
- Cleaning up after surgical/dental procedures, set up for next procedure
- Assisting Doctors with outpatients, including restraint, diagnostics (xrays, ultrasound, labwork), treatments, administering medications (oral, SQ, IV, IM), entering charges and creating departing instructions
Qualifications
The following experience/education is required.
- 18 years of age
- High School Diploma or its equivalent.
- 6 months experience in a veterinary setting or equivalent to 2 terms/semester of veterinary coursework
- Strong interpersonal skills for interacting with doctors, co-workers and clients.

Daily Deliverables
Veterinary Assistants will be held accountable for handling the following tasks each day and will be trained to complete these tasks in alignment with BRVC processes, protocols, and ethics/values.
- Patients are treated safely at all times. This includes caging pets, handling, stocking supplies, providing medical care, and recording of communications.
- Is responsive to assignments/requests from Registered Veterinary Technicians, leads, and doctors.
- Observes patient appearance and behavior for signs of discomfort, illness, or other issues.
- Consistently reports to work on time and with a positive attitude.
Additional Requirements
The nature of the Veterinary Assistant role requires the following to complete work tasks:
- On-site presence.
- An ability to see, hear, and rapidly process what is occurring in the fast-paced work setting. Close vision is essential for completion of job duties.
- Ability to use hands and fingers to handle and feel.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time, to reach with arms and hands, to climb, and to balance, stoop, crouch, kneel, crawl, and bend repeatedly.
- Ability to lift pets (25 lbs) and to team lift pets (55 lbs), to lift/stock heavy supplies, and to clean animal cages and restrain animals properly (to minimize risk of bites and scratches).
- Must wear protective clothing at times and take precautions when treating animals with germicides or insecticides.
- Strong communication skills in spoken English.
