Summary
Performs venipuncture on outpatients, of all age groups as ordered by a medical provider. Performs phlebotomy duties and other related tasks according to BMH Laboratory Policy and Procedure assigned by supervisors.
Essential Functions

- Responsible for collecting routine blood specimens, and urine specimens.
- Verifies patient identity prior to collection of specimens.
- Provides age-appropriate care and treatment, as defined by the department to neonates, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
- Performs venipunctures using aseptic technique according to departmental policies and procedures.
- Transports specimens to the lab per infection control policies and procedures.
- Collects specimens for chain of custody drug testing.
- Assists in reporting functions, following departmental policies and procedures.
- Must keep work area clean, neat, orderly and well stocked.
- Responsible for answering the phone, assessing need and responding accordingly. Seeks assistance from Supervisor, MA/RN, Lab Techs, or Providers as necessary.
- Performs clerical duties and has basic computer skills. Maintains an accurate and up-to-date file system of lab results requiring filing.
- Works well with others in a team effort while showing respect to supervisory personnel and fellow workers.
- Participates in the performance improvement process.
- Demonstrates understanding of and compliance with hospital policies and procedures and assumes responsibility for learning new policies and procedures.
- Must attend in-services education as required.
- Maintains a safe environment for self and others.
- Effective and tactful communication is maintained between patients and fellow staff members.
- Work performance demonstrates competency of skill and concepts.
- This job description requires a telephone in residence as a condition of employment.
Qualifications
Required Skills, Qualifications, and Competencies
- Hold a valid certification in Phlebotomy. Either hold or acquire upon hiring, a Point of Care Technician License.

Physical demands
- Sitting (6-8 hours), standing(1-2 hours), walking, lifting <10 pounds often, lifting 11-50 pounds seldom, reaching, pulling, kneeling, crouching/stooping, coordination of simultaneous operations.
Travel required
- May be assigned to transport lab specimens to the main laboratory at BMH.
Required education and experience
- High school graduate, or equivalent.
- Formalized training in phlebotomy.
- Valid phlebotomy certification.
- CPR certification.
- Valid drivers license.
- Point of Care license (can be acquired upon hiring)
- Knowledge of laboratory equipment needed to suit job requirements.
Preferred education and experience
- Some phlebotomy and CLIA Waived testing experience preferred.
