Mission Statement
The mission of BUMC’s Afterschool Bilingual Program is to provide a safe, loving, and nurturing environment for 3rd-8th grade students after their school day ends. Furthermore, this program’s goal is to help Spanish-speaking children to improve their English skills and to help English-speaking children to improve their Spanish skills. Our aim will be to help build connections and relationships among students and families across languages and cultures.

Position Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
This person will:
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Have a valid driver’s license.
  • Have desirable fluency in Spanish and English or Advanced knowledge of the Spanish language(with strong oral and written skills).
  • Have at least one year of experience in youth programming or education, with at least one year in a leadership or supervisory role.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Have experience working in diverse, multilingual communities.
  • Have knowledge of trauma-informed practices and positive behavior interventions.
  • Have familiarity with local educational and youth services resources.
  • Have experience with applying to grants and fundraising to support and sustain non-profit programs.
Health & Safety Requirements
  • Have the ability to pass a criminal background check and meet all child safety requirements; must retain eligibility throughout employment.
  • Provide identification for the I-9 Homeland Security Check, which must be approved by the Advisory Committee for employment.
Areas of Responsibility
Program Development & Implementation
This person will be required to:
  • Foster a safe, inclusive, nurturing, and positive environment for all participants.
  • Assist with daily activities to ensure a high-quality, engaging, and developmentally appropriate experience for all students.
  • Assist with enforcement of behavior management and discipline procedures and policies that promote respect, collaboration between staff and student, responsibility, and safety.
Staff Leadership & Supervision
  • Assist the Director with conducting interviews, hiring qualified staff, and providing onboarding and ongoing training.
  • Create and manage the work schedule for staff and volunteers.
  • Promote and model responsible, respective, and compassionate behavior at all times.
Administrative & Financial Oversight
  • Manage student enrollment processes, including creating accounts, collecting tuition and fees, issuing payment statements, and addressing returned checks and late payments.
  • Coordinate payroll with BUMC Church Administrator.
  • Maintain detailed records of all receipts, disbursements, and financial activity related to the program.
  • Assist the Director with the development of the annual budget in consultation with the Advisory Committee; present it for approval and implement approved adjustments needed.
  • Assist the Director to apply for grants and fundraise to support and sustain the program.
Work Week
  • The Assistant Director shall be compensated $18 an hour for up to a 20 hour work week during the Watauga County Academic School Year (August-May).
  • On program days (Monday-Friday) the Assistant Director will be on-site from 2pm-6pm, unless otherwise approved by the Director; the Assistant Director may occasionally be off-site to run program-related errands or to transport enrolled students using the van. Occasional weekend hours may be necessary related to van maintenance.
  • During June and July, on-site office hours may be flexible as needed to check messages, maintain financial matters and assist the Director as needed.

This program is a collaboration between local schools and Boone UMC’s Outreach Program. It is not a faith-led program.
